Its been an exciting few months for Melbourne’s breakthrough deep house and disco producer The Tortoise aka Torquhil Anderson. With his debut EP on London’s 3rd strike records being warmly received and supported by the likes of Mark E, The Revenge, Iron Curtis, Jacques Renault and Milton Jackson, as well as selling out two vinyl pressings and reaching number three on the Juno singles charts. The Tortoise is well versed in the party end of deep house, where soft Rhodesy chords and well worn vocal clichés meet irresistible elements of funk and boogie, exemplified here on this debut release.
His next outing is on Berlins acclaimed Dirt Crew Records who are celebrating their 50th release with a compilation featuring all original tracks from many amazing artists including; Iron Curtis, Mano Le Tough, Till von Sein, Chymera and Dirt Crew themselves. The Tortoises contribution; The Tortoise Goes To The Orchestra exposes a deeper/rawer edge to his sound. Built upon a strong rolling bass line, lush layered keys and some interesting orchestral sounds. The energy builds throughout the breakdown and beyond thanks to a tasty piano hook and some mind-bending hat programming. In addition to the 15 track digital release (now available), there is also a limited addition vinyl release featuring Tortoises track alongside Iron Curtis and Plan D’aqua;
Look out for his full artist EP with Dirt Crew in coming months, as well as more records for 3rd Strike and Detroit’s Kolour imprint.
