Are you a Freak?
Freaks were born in 1994, the brainchild of Justin Harris and Luke Solomon. Over the following years they began recording for Phono, home of Herbert and Swag.
The first few releases, which came in three parts, saw them journey through filter disco (the shrunken head), quirky mid tempo house (journey's through happiness), and minimal techno (the Milwaukee Stance.) Every-time leaving their bleepy imprint on their varying tastes.
In 1999 they decided it was time to set up a label to utilize as a vehicle for their ever increasing studio output whilst along the way also remixing for artists such as Pulp, Mood 2 Swing and Alison Limerick. Hence Music for Freaks, the label was born.
Freaks kicked off the show releasing a series of 4 12 inches each with a collectable sleeve, and it was at this point that the artwork became very much a part of their musical path.
Their first album, the Beat Diaries, was exactly that, a diary of their progress to this point, and introduced the vocal talents of one Stella Attar, along with a writing collaboration with Dave Lee, AKA Joey Negro.
Continuing to remix for various mainstream and underground artists they set to work on their second studio album, "Meanwhile Back At The Disco". This was a DJ friendly return to the dance floor and release as a mini LP in 2001.
All this time MFF began to gather steam as a label with a difference, releasing music from artists such as Kenny Hawkes. A new sound of the underground was being born, and a Freaky one at that.
Freaks continued to record and began working with Dwayne Washington (aka DJ Diz) alongside Stella Attar, bass player, Rub, and guitarist Jonny Rock. It was then they realised they were onto something. The idea for their third studio album ,"The Man Who Lived Underground," was born. They enlisted the story writing talents of long time friend, Paul Rogers, and set about writing the preface to the album, documenting 2 men's struggle with society and conformity.
Out of this songs such as "The Creeps", "Where Were You When The Lights Went Out?", and "80's Throwback" were born. Each of which went on to become singular successes in their own right. Freaks continued to remix artist such as Damon Albarn, Kasabian and more recently Chicken Lips. This leads us to present day and Freaks have just finished recording a demo of their forthcoming unsigned album, "Psych!" This includes the single, "Tweekers", which is currently doing the rounds on a LTD 12 inch, and was recently featured single of the week in DJ magazine.
However make no mistake, this is not just a studio album. Freaks are a fullyfledged live act who have made appearances at major gigs over the past 2 years, including Homelands, Back 2 Basics, Cargo, and the Ministry of Sound. The live band features the vocal talents of front woman Stella Attar and vocal collaborator, Diz (from Chicago), Jonny Rock on guitar, Rub on bass and Justin and Luke on keyboards and percussion.
