Ashique ‘Subb-an’ Subhan’s rise to prominence has been a steady one, and his prodigal talent has seen him play at festivals all over his native England as well as become a fixture at club nights and festivals around the world.
His career in music began early, and he was DJing at just 14. Wasting no time, Subb-an enrolled in a digital music production course at the age of sixteen and had graduated with a top degree in sound design from Birmingham University in 2009.
Unlike his peers, Subb-an wasn’t attending uni parties; he was busy founding one of the UK’s clubbing institutions, Below, inspired by summers spent at Ibiza’s DC10. The first party was thrown back in 2005 at the back of the Rainbow pub in Digbeth Birmingham, and has only continued to go from strength to strength. The night eventually gained so much traction that Sub-ann’s business partners and friends Adam Shelton and Lee McDonald ended up buying the pub. While Subb- an has been the main draw card for in-the- know clubbers who continue to flock to the legendary parties, Below has drawn headliners such as Sven Vath, Loco Dice, Seth Troxler, Mathias Tanzmann and Jamie Jones.
His highly lauded productions have been released on labels such as Crosstown Rebels, Spectral, Saved and My Favourite Robot and he has hav lent his skills to remixes for Lana Del Rey, Jamie Woon and Hollis P Munroe. His debut track ‘Italia’ released in 2008 on Matt Tolfrey’s Leftroom Records imprint saw both his peers and critics respond strongly, and gathered support from industry heavyweights such as Richie Hawtin, Sasha and Laurent Garnier, not mention slavering praise from Mixmag, DJ Mag and IDJ.
Subb-an’s discography boasts some of underground house and techno’s biggest labels with releases on Crosstown Rebels, Spectral and Ellum backed up by past hits on Jamie Jones’ Hot Creations, Saved, Silver Network, Mothership, Leftroom, BPitch Control, 2020 Vision, Trapez Ltd, Immigrant Records and Noir Music.
His production output has seen him named DJ Magazines ‘Best Breakthrough DJ’ at their 2011 awards and was the third most charted artist of 2011 on Resident Advisor.
