BIOGRAPHY
History:
Born in smalltown Pretoria into a family of seven, Elvis Maswanganyi - aka DJ Mujava - started out as a dancer then before finding interest in a small keyboard at his home and later taking influence from DJ Fresh, DJ Oskido, Masters At Work, Revolution and Loop Masters. Self-taught and dedicated his brother gave up money save for a birthday bash to buy him his first computer.
Before long his music was high rotation on local radio, with "taxis and taverners flocking to Mujava's house to requesting that he give them the music he was producing". And with his music blaring down Main Street, his productions became the talk of town.
He shunned recording deals in the short-term, preferring instead to look and learn [at] the business side of this industry... with local Gospel producer, Cry, he then started House Therapy Productions, producing music for the likes of Bujo Mujo, Casablanca (DJ Floit), DJ Cee, Getto Skwatt (Hip Group), Simon Makhatholele, Tsala & Spoko - producing several chart topers through 2004.
He also has five albums to his name: 'House Assignment 1 & 2', 'Bass & Drums 1 & 2', 'DJ Mujava presents Getto Skwatt', 'House Rawkers' and lastly 'DJ's by Nature'. More recently he has teamed up with Sheer House, South Africa's masters of dance music, putting out DJ Mujava's latest work 'Sgubu sa pitori 3'. He has since signed to Warp Record in the UK (as we all know) with more from "the finest boy's production from Pretoria" on its way.
Bio:
DJ Mujava has set the touch light on floors across the UK and Europe with his evocative digital shakedown 'Township Funk'. The track has already been signed to the UK's #1 dance label Warp, and with remixes being farmed in from far and wide and publishing deals through the roof 'Township Funk' is set to do what Samim's Heater did last summer: tear the club and festival circuit to shreds! And as with Heater, that introduced the world the South American sub genre Cumbia, trading off its hypnotic accordion vibe, Township Funk rolls out the South African house hybrid Kwaito and its intoxicating blend of tones and drums. The track comes complete with significant youtube hype and views of the contagious dance (video) from the streets of SA.
Building on the recurrent interest in house and afro beat has been percolating across the Northern Hemisphere this year, Kwaito (that emerged in Johannesburg in the 1990s) loops African samples, percussion, deep basslines and unique electronics. Wait til this little diddy gets in your head; this will be the sound - nay soundtrack - to Summer; "It couldn't be simpler - or better" (Boomkat, Manchester). Mujava's DJ sets are a back to basics tribal / acid house and Kwaito workout.
