BIOGRAPHY
Context began MC’ing in February 2005, and after just two weeks, he entered a local battle in a Norwich nightclub. In April he won the monthly competition with a reward of £250. Having had a confidence boost, Context left battling to begin writing and recording in aim to pursue a professional career in music. In 2006, Context wrote and recorded ‘The Catalyst Promotional PRE-P’ which was highly credited by britishhiphop.co.uk; "Relatable, 'could easily live round my corner' talk...he puts real life in consumer friendly context - ...You know what that says? 'I can really spit. And that's what I'm here to show you".
In October 2007 Context began producing his own beats which were greatly influenced by the brooding Hip-Hop of Mobb Deep, but also Dubstep and drum and bass – a style coined ‘Dub Hop’. In just 3 months, he self-produced, wrote, and self-recorded with his first EP: ‘Dialectics’. This independent release led to great reviews: “The Dialectics EP is…strong, vibrant originality”, a truly buck language master” – britishhiphop.co.uk and feature length interviews and features with Unreality TV, Pulse Radio, Pot Purri, Music On Air and Britishhiphop.
Tracks off the EP were played on BBC Radio 1 by Huw Stephens and included in the ‘Best Of’ podcast, and were played by Ras Kwame on BBC 1Xtra. A prominent local dubstep and breakbeat DJ created a mixtape of the tunes off the EP fused with prominent dubstep tracks, and Context subsequently opened for Bloc Party, Dizzee Rascal, Shy FX, Andy C, Metronomy, Man Like Me, Mala, Brookes Brothers, Cotti, Cyantific and Caspa.
Following several months of live performances and promotion Context released the follow up EP – ‘Liberatingly Oppressive Vol.1’, and was invited to host a special edition of BBC Introducing’s local programming on its launch day. The EP was said to be: “Context's best work yet. It's catchy, confident, current and easy to digest”
To date Context has been collaborating with some of the biggest names in Dubstep and has just released the ‘Is It (Rat Attack Mix)’ single which has already been played on BBC 1Xtra, and featured on 1Xtra’s Best of HomeGrown Podcast which is the second inclusion in less than a year.
