iPotsoyi Festival was shut down on Saturday, just an hour before close, after a shooting left one patron dead.

According to commentary on the event page, the victim, 23-year-old Junior Pieterse, was shot in the head while on the smaller, second dancefloor around 11PM on October 20th.

iPotsoyi organisers Groove Africa posted a press release on Facebook stating: “Over the years we have used one of the nation’s most reputable safety and security companies to ensure full compliance with the Sports & Recreation Mass Gathering Act and all the requirements of the Cape Town Events Office and the city services.

“It is unfortunate that after yesterday’s turn of events our vision has been lost; a vision which seeks to bring people together peacefully through the love of music. With heavy hearts we have taken the decision to discontinue this event series.”

The event ended abruptly after the incident, leaving many patrons fuming as the final headlining acts, A-Reece and AKA, had to be cancelled.

AKA took to Twitter to send his apologies and condolences:

Police confirm that a murder case has been opened and the circumstances are currently under investigation.
