After making his debut in Nairobi, SURAJ has emerged as a dynamic, trailblazing DJ/Producer in East Africa. Since then, he has set his sights on becoming a beacon in Africa's burgeoning electronic music scene.
Harnessing an electronic vocabulary, SURAJ rekindles the meaning behind intelligent musical art. SURAJ has well and truly encouraged the trajectory evolution of genre-omitting electronic music in Kenya and East Africa. Organically, SURAJ’s beats have synthesized an array of influences; sourcing and cultivating the blossoming sounds that give the sonic profile it deserves. With his topping original ‘Wawere’, to his remix for Sarabi ‘Fire’ and ‘Kokos Vibration’, and of course of Kato Change’s ‘Abiro’, SURAJ has taken the stance for delivering a quality musical arrangement. His uncompromising commitment to great sound and good music is a consistent marvel of what the Kenyan Afro guru is capable of.
In just a matter of time, his music & live shows have become a fixture for fans and DJs alike and made his talent and captivating personality known to many on the continent and around the world. As he continues to shine and become even more sought-after, SURAJ is honing his skills and making every release and performance better than the last. His most notable moment came in 2015 where he played for Kenya Nights alongside one of Kenya’s most recognized bands, Sarabi.
SURAJ was exposed to an eclectic combination of music at an early age. He had a lot of time to develop his sound. A signature sound that is holding the Kenyan flag up high globally. An active member In the electronic music scene in Kenya, SURAJ, along with his partners Dyaln Sejpal [Dylan-S] Sheel Jethwa [Dread Steppa] and Akaash Patel [Foozak], founded Midi Minds Kenya, who together focus on the educational and interactive front of music production using seminars, and workshops as a main medium, in order to eventually showcase the music made under these workshop through events, publishing and record sales (CD, Vinyl & Digital).
The Kenyan Afro legend has been on the bill with some amazing acts in Nairobi, such as Diplo/Major Lazer, Hyenah, Pablo Fierro, Da Capo, Trancemiscoul, Thibo Tazz, Art Department, Huxley, DJ Maphorisa to name a few. He’s released on labels such as Moblack Records, Redbull Studios Cape Town, Akwaaba Music, Dhulka Music and Santuri Safari.
‘I see and hope our scene is self-sustaining and more possibilities of this profession actually being respected and valued arise in the years to come. I also hope we get fundamental infrastructure to be able to support such professions’ is what SURAJ had to say about the Kenyan electronic music scene.' He’s currently finished up a remix for Lazarusman out on HOUSE MUSIC WITH LOVE, and just launched a podcast with the infamous Madorasindahouse. The future looks bright as we’ll see more of his one-of-a-kind remixes and remarkable releases in the near future.
