In 2013, a mystical creature from the Canadian Rockies by the name of moosefly released an under-the-radar remix on German label Kaato Music. Followed up by the original track “Super Disco Workout Special” on Welldone! Music, the remix was then picked up by three other record labels the following year.

The remix created a snowball effect, with moosefly releases appearing on KNM, Connoisseur and Systematic by 2015, quickly positioning the mysterious act as a go-to for glacial deep house.

After playing alongside acts like Dirty Doering and Teenage Mutants, moosefly comes to South Africa for the first time thanks to the Kalushi Recordings crew, to experience the wonder that Africa holds.

Performing at Colorbox in Cape Town on November 10th and Truth in Johannesburg on the 11th, we caught up with the elusive moosefly to find out more about this intriguing act.

Your name is quite peculiar. How did you come up with the name moosefly?

Moose is like the biggest of the deer family, and we’ve got a fun rivalry going on with deer. Basically we just wanted to be bigger than deer, just to prove to the deer we could be cool, or fly, either way. Maybe we were just overcompensating for something, it’s quite ridiculous when you think about it.

Would you say your music is as fantasy-like as your name?

Oh man, I would say we try to start every song by first watching Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

What are some of your earliest memories of electronic music?

Well, I started out as a pro swimmer in the forests of northern Canada, and I would listen to Ace of Base to pump myself up.

What made you get into DJing and music production?

Music is just so amazing, I was attracted to it the first time I ever heard it. So I bought myself a used computer, a Speak & Spell and a copy of Propellerhead Rebirth.

Which three songs have influenced your sound the most?

1. Matthew Herbert - It’s Only (DJ Koze Remix)

2. Nathan Fake - The Sky Was Pink (James Holden Remix)

3. Trentemoller - Miss You (Original Mix)

How are you feeling about your tour of SA and what have your heard about the dance music scene here?

Stoked, I’ve heard there’s a vibrant, active, growing scene here. moosefly can’t wait!

Are there any producers you think we should keep our eye on in the future?

Honestly, two moosefly collaborators that are extremely talented (so jealous, so jealous) are Iain Howie & Jared Love. Besides that I think Patrice Baumel and Tim Engelhard are always on point!

What’s one thing moosefly cannot live without?

Old, bizarre, archived images from the internets.

If a moosefly went back-to-back with another mythical creature, what would it be?

A Minotaur.

Tell us one thing people don’t know about you.

moosefly are dizygotic twins.

Pulse have four tickets and a bottle of tequila to give away to one lucky person for the Cape Town leg of the moosefly SA tour.
