South Africa’s live performance scene is gaining a lot of attention at the moment. And with many new live bands taking to the stage, a resurgence of live music in SA is imminent.
But one artist who has always been ahead of the pack is Shane Cooper aka Card On Spokes.
Having released his As We Surface EP in September last year, Shane continues to impress with his eclectic live electronica sounds. And the latest live video for “Faded Pictures” is a clear sign of his prowess as a producer and as a musician.
“The video was shot in Cape Town with Lionfish Productions, who created my “Ribbon Tooth” music video as well. The original version of this song appears on my EP As We Surface from 2016, and features two different artists from Joburg: Siya Makuzeni, and Marcus Wyatt. I wanted to do a new live version with some featured guests from Cape Town,” says Cooper.
Featuring the sultry vocals of Bonj Mpanza and the melodic stylings of Robin Fassie-Kock on trumpet, “Faded Pictures” is a smooth vocal house tune reminiscent of British electronica producer Bonobo. With an unorthodox rhythm structure and a definite future-jazz influence, the song evolves with electric piano chords morphing above the driving bassline.
While most of these elements would not be surprising for avid Spokes fans, it is evident that Shane is a master within the live environment and is an ever-growing powerhouse of talent and inspiration.
“I've got some really exciting stuff in the pipeline,” says Cooper. “I'll be running a crowdfunding campaign over the month of July on indiegogo.com to raise money to record an album with my new jazz group MABUTA. It'll be a full length album accompanied by a remix EP with some incredible remix producers lined up from SA, UK (a Ninja Tune recording artist) and the US (a Brainfeeder recording artist). These will be announced soon. People can support by pre-buying albums, either digital, CD, or limited edition 7-inch vinyls.”
“I'll also be releasing some super limited edition Card On Spokes 7-inch vinyls with a new single on in a few months time. The single won't be released digitally for a while so the physical copy will be the only way to get it. I'll also announce those details in due time too.
