It’s no surprise that the world is looking at South Africa as one of the top electronic music nations in the world, with many of its artists landing on the global stage in recent months.

Billed amongst some of the world’s best electronic music artists, both Black Coffee and STAB Virus will play Awakenings in Area B on June 25th, playing on the same stage as Âme, Loco Dice and The Martinez Brothers.

Comprised of Siphe Tebeka and Audiojerk, STAB Virus have garnered an immense amount of attention due to their world-class productions and immersive techno sets. Their track “The Unknown Song”, which Coyu edited and released on his Suara imprint, helped the duo become one of South Africa’s fastest rising electronic acts, earning them praise internationally in the process.

We had a brief chat with STAB Virus about this massive leap in their career.

What was it like hearing that you had been booked at one of the biggest festivals in the world? We couldn't believe it, I mean... Awakenings is the best techno festival in the world. When we got an email saying they wanna book us for Awakenings, we thought we read the email wrong. We had pinch ourselves because we thought we were dreaming. Awakenings is every [techno] DJ’s dream festival to play at. We only heard about Awakenings in 2014, and it's been our dream festival ever since.

How did the booking come about? I, Audiojerk, was very privileged to be sent to Amsterdam to play the Boiler Room event by Bridges for Music. While there, Valentino introduced me to the owner of Awakenings. It wasn’t till I arrived back in SA that I realized our agency Tenfold had been in talks with the owners, too, for some time. They believed in us and the South African music scene, the stars aligned and the booking came through!

How does it feel to be flying the flag for the South African techno scene alongside the country’s biggest DJ, Black Coffee? It’s a dream come true and an absolute honor. We don’t take the responsibility lightly and can assure you we are working on something special that will make you all proud!

What are you looking forward to most? We are looking forward to meet our heroes, because Awakenings is like a techno artist’s conference—every techno artist from around the world is there. We also can't wait to be around that kinda atmosphere, with people from around the world going there for the music. And we are looking forward to our set, because we wanna put together something really special and unique.

"This is obviously our biggest gig to date and we are damn excited to take our new live show to Europe,” Sebastian Zanasi of Christian Tiger School told us about Sónar. “Bring on the pintxos!"

So far this year’s Sónar line-up includes Carl Craig, Daphni, Hunee, Anderson .Paak, Nicolas Jaar, Justice, and many more. It will be the first time the group will tour with drummer Ruben Crowie (The City), taking their performance into new and exciting territory.
