Corona Sunsets Festival 2016 takes to the shores of Cape Town this weekend with three massive headliners. Bass house don Duke Dumont, Spinnin’ Records’ Sam Feldt and blissful vocal house femme fatale Nora En Pure join some of the best dance acts from South Africa’s three major cities. As always, the headliners steal the limelight while the local support acts do what they do best, so here’s our pick of the five best local acts who will be gracing the immense Corona stage.
No surprises here. Kyle has been a prominent figure in the international bass house scene since 2009, releasing on labels like Bunny Tiger, dirtybird, This Ain’t Bristol and even Universal Music SA. His forward-thinking approach to dancefloor oriented bass house music has earned him a top spot amongst the country’s greatest artists and he will no doubt be one of the stand out acts at the festival.
The weird and wonderful trio of Dakin Auret, Kostakis and Ronald Rowley have just wrapped up an epic Lake House party on December 10th and will be coming in hot to Corona Sunsets Festival. Their hit-single “Changes” has been a massive highlight of 2016, with Australian producers Cut Snake recently dropping a monstrous remix of this badass single. Keep an eye on these guys in 2017, they’re geared up to flip the scene on its head in the new year!
Chunda Munki & Vimo
Two giants in bass house, Chunda Munki and Vimo are at the forefront of this exciting emerging scene in the country. As a producer, Chunda Munki has proved his chops time and time again and alongside Vimo’s Chutney Records, the two are marshalling a new era of dancefloor antics into South Africa. With bold, energetic b2b sets, these cats have the ability to elevate any crowd to a fever pitch and leaving them frothing for more.
The Durban local has made some major moves this year with production credits on hit singles by Kyle Deutsch, Danny-K, Jimmy Nevis, Aewon Wolf, Ameen Harron and Locnville, and his own single “Let You Know” featuring Shekhinah, which racked up almost 1 million views on YouTube in eight months. Recently signed to Ultra Music USA, Sketchy Bongo is currently one of the hottest producers in the country and packs a heavy dose of electro, trap, moombahton and dubstep in his electrifying sets. Add live performances by Aewon Wolf, Kyle Deutsch and Shekhinah to Bongo’s set and you’ve got a powerful combo of South African talent.
The talented band Goodluck have had an amazing year, playing Berlin, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Dortmund and Mauritius, releasing their third album The Nature Within on October 14th. Their infectious and uplifting sound has stolen the hearts of fans all over the world, and coupled with their annual Get Lucky Summer residency at Plett Rage, they have dominated the season with good vibes across their 13 gigs in December alone.
