In the midst of Kinky Disco's 10th season opening party, a quick turn of the head to the left and I was hit with Cape Town reminding us of why this city is one of the most beautiful places to be in the world. What looked like a crack in the heavens, a majestic sunset poured its orange and fuchsia hues onto the clouds above, igniting the gloomy sky into a glimmering cascade of fire. But with the day starting off on a grey an gloomy note, it would take a good few hours before we got to experience the glory of what this amazing venue had to offer.

With the frivolity starting at noon, revellers began getting ready for Kinky Disco's beachside boutique festival from the time they woke up. However, with grey skies hovering over the entire city for the majority of the day, it took a few hours before the Koggel Bay Resort was full; but the opening DJs brought their A-game and kept the dancefloor grooving. The beach-side party adopted a grey tinge, with a slight chill in the air and the fresh sea breeze seemed to engulf the lush green campsite; but the thunderous sound system provided an exhilarating yet frivolous atmosphere.

DJs Rebel Clef, Ctrl-room, B-Type and Khubu kept the heat flowing, bringing the party animals together for a warm-up session, in more ways than one; and the party was about to be hit with an epic turn of events.

As Black Book began to stoke the fire with their deep and dark sounds, the dancefloor started to shift its focus. Now, as a DJ, this can be the most excruciating experience ever. But it wasn't their music that distracted the crowd. Cape Town showed it's beauty in one of the most magnificent sunsets we've seen this season. The glorious light eminating from the distance excited revellers, giving us a refreshed outlook when returning to the dancefloor.

One of the organisors, Thiago Kanan, better known as Kanan K7, stepped up to a rejuvenated crowd and gave the eager beavers a solid dose of  techno with a touch of acid and indie sounds, elevating the dancers to a fever pitch. With the crowd reeling it was time to bring on one of South Africa's most respected techno duos.

The fine balance which Killer Robot exude is definitely notable, bringing a well-rounded repertoire to the proceedings. Combining moments of foot-stomping, grooving and hands in the air euphoria, the duo gave the dance floor a solid workout, rising and dropping the energy with the crowd hanging on every beat.

After walking off the stage to applause, the Robot made way for the headliner, British DJ and producer (by way of Berlin) Eric Volta. Chatting to Eric before his set, he emphasised his love for Cape Town, and it's no surprise that he loves the city so much. He is an artist in more ways than one, expressing himself in every possible way he can imagine; and this city seems to be just right for his exploration of art and life.

With the heightened energy in the venue, Eric did what any headliner should do at that point and hit the reset button; bringing the crowd into his vibe and taking them on a journey. The slow pace of his intro gave people a chance to relax and mellowed the vibes a bit before he embarked on his voyage into sound and emotion. His connection to the music was evident, and the set was undoubtedly the standout set for the night.

With a tough spot to fill, Dogstarr stepped on with conviction and steered the dancefloor into his sound, keeping things high-spirited before diving deep into techno. The Johannesburg veteran was the perfect booking to close the night and provided a truly enjoyable set for the dancers.

The myriad of sounds experienced throughout was impressively well curated and perfectly arranged. Technically, it was difficult to find fault with the production. The sound was punchy and enticing, the lighting was well-executed and strategically placed around the venue, the staff were friendly and the venue, of course, was breathtaking.

Ten seasons down the line Kinky Disco has maintained its quality execution, and anticipation is already mounting for their next blissful beachside event.
