There has been a lot of talk and anticipation around one of the last events to take place at the famous Assembly in Cape Town this weekend. Young DJs and entrepreneurs Lenzo Corner and Liam Smith have put together an event that has got us really excited about the upcoming summer season. This Is Deep is a party created by Dazer, the hosting company owned by the two young men. The brand started as a podcast series in 2014 and has now become a fully fledged event featuring some of South Africa's finest deep house DJs.
In a city that has a history of producing world-class talent and amazing parties, deep house has become a staple of the electronic music scene in Cape Town. While the sonic environment and identity of deep house has evolved over the years, there is one thing that has stood the test of time: the unity experienced when bringing people together to get down and shake a leg. As the newcomers to a well-developed music scene, we chat with Liam Smith (one-half of DJ duo The Smiths) to shed some light on this exciting new movement within the younger house music community.
What is This Is Deep and what does the brand stand for? - This Is Deep, is a movement myself and Lenzo are starting. We are trying to attract people who have an appreciation for music, where the DJs can express the way they feel within music as an art-form.
What made you create this event? - It was our love for music. We have always wanted to host our own event and the time came after we had played a gig the night before, Lenzo sent me an image of a lineup, and he said: "Imagine if we threw this event." So I replied saying "I'm keen, let's make it happen!" Ever since that day we started on the event and never gave up ever since then. By the grace of God, we are now proud to announce that our event will be happening tomorrow.
What is Dazer? - Dazer was founded by DJ/Producer - Lenzo in the year 2014. It was created to become a pioneering events company, record label, & podcast series. Emerging through the music industry, Dazer soon found much success via its podcast series "Dazer & Friends" which soon found itself hosting five ULTRA MUSIC FESTIVAL acts, one being an international feature within the first ten episodes of the podcast. Dazer now aims to make an imprint with the launch of both the events division, as well as it's record label which is scheduled to launch at the end of 2016/ early 2017.
How would you define the sound of Dazer and who have your influences been? - Dazer is a unique sound that comprises a blend of UK house and that deep soulful feeling. Our music Influences would be Julian Gomes and Kaytranada. The reason being, they both are so different in their sound and in the way their music speaks to you.
How do you guys feel about the event? - We are super amped to bring Cape Town an amazing event with one euphoric line up with top class acts. It will be the last Friday at Assembly with two amazing dance floors!
Lastly, what can we expect on the night? - You can expect nothing but love being spread through the music of our fellow artists, we'll be bringing you thumping basslines and an amazing light show.
Dazer have put together a stellar line-up for the event including Leighton Moody, Terrasoul, Bryan Travis, Irshaad Samaai, Joeyeezi and Twinspin, as well as headliner Mig Madiq from Johannesburg. The party is geared to be a belter, landing slap-dab on the beginning of the Matric forty-days countdown. This Is Deep with be an insightful look into what the youth have in store for the music scene in the future. Tickets are available from Quicket. Visit the event page for more details.
