From EDM to techno and house music - these artists are distinguished by their respected craft and talents with familiar roots hailing from the shores of the Philippines. We pick out five (half) Filipino artists who are making waves worldwide.
Born in Manila, Philippines, Laidback Luke is undoubtedly one of EDM's heavyweights. Since minting his debut release in 1995, Luke's authority has only strengthened with the changing tides of dance music. His high-energy performances and productions have catapulted him as one of EDM's most beloved stars. The award-winning Mixmash Records labelhead continues to tour around the world, having headlined several festivals in the Philippines.
Often described as a producer to watch out for – Manila Killa is garnering international attention with his unique approach to electronic music. The Washington DC-based producer hones a diverse range of productions citing influences including Cashmere Cat and Goldroom. Manila Killa embraces his time living in the Philippines as the inspiration behind his musical career. TJ Hertz is a beloved figure in the underground scene. As his moniker Objekt, the Berlin-based DJ and producer released his anticipated debut album last year on Hessle Audio. The Native Instruments software engineer turned producer has graced the stages of Dimensions Festival, Moma PS1, Sonar and Dekmantel. His productions are wild, dark with a distinct avant-garde flare and have gained put him as one of the top artists according to respected electronic music news outlet Resident Advisor.
Scarlette Etienne has captivated audiences through her music. The stunning artist is a multi-instrumentalist and DJ who has collaborated with the likes of Nile Rodgers and Felix Da Housecat. Her versatility as an artist has allowed her to play DJ sets at Matthew Williamson's fashion shows to the Robot Heart bus at Burning Man. Asides from being a resident DJ and music curator of the W Hotels, Scarlett has her scheduled packed with gigs across the world, including Thailand's Wonderfruit in 2015.
Anthony Middleton (Audiofly)
As one half of the house duo sensation Audiofly, it may come to a surprise that the U.K-born DJ and producer has his roots in the Philippines. With a seemingly never-ending gig diary that sees regular slots at the likes of Fabric, Warung, Amnesia. Anthony is also becoming synonymous with his own Flying Circus parties which have become the highlights of WMC and Sonar. The producer and sound engineer also overlooks two record labels: Supernature and Maison D'Etre.
