This archive news footage from 1986 has been dug up by the Red Bull Music Academy, introducing house music to the mainstream in Chicago after it had been going largely unnoticed in its place of origin.

These were still early days for the house scene, as the reporter highlights that the sound was “still a long way from sweeping the city”, but the newsreader claims “It may only be a matter of time before house musicians become heroes in their own homes” and she wasn’t wrong as house music pioneers invaded the musical landscape of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s.

The footage confirms the UK was way ahead of the game though, with Steve ‘Silk’ Hurley’s ‘Jack Your Body ‘ hitting the number one spot in the UK charts despite receiving little attention in the US.

Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk also appears, talking the reporter through the process of making a track with samplers, drum machines and synths.
