Anjunadeep 05

The masterful deep house and progressive house label Anjunadeep wades into deeper waters this time around for their newest compilation, ‘Anjunadeep 05.’ Mixed by label head James Grant and the legendary Jody Wisternoff of Way Out West, the highly anticipated Anjunadeep 05 showcases captivating sounds across two discs of ambient electronica, deep house, modern garage, and techno. With tracks from Matt Lange, Andrew Bayer, Universal Solution, and more, the mixes brim with emotional and melodic resonances.

James Grant’s mix on disc one opens with chilled electronica, Croquet Club’s “Cardigan,” which is supported on BBC Radio 1 by Zane Lowe. From that point on, disc one is packed with exclusive original tracks from Dusky, Vincenzo, Tom Middleton, Beckwith, and DAVI. Grant devises a theme of modern melodic deepness that follows through until the end. Andrew Bayer teams up with James Grant in “Living,” a soaked-in groove with percussive fills and a melancholic breakdown. The two also join forces to remix “It’s Cool” by Australian group The Presets, reconstructing the synth-pop original into a stripped-down hypnotic vocal piece, complemented with pianos. Rising talent Universal Solution, aka Gavin Holland, contributes with the dark and spacey “Osheen.” The deep bassline really drives the track throughout this slow-building progressive journey. His other track “Yukon” builds beautifully with ambience and a tough 909 percussion.

Responsible for some of the best deep house tracks of the past year, London duo Dusky make an appearance on the label that released their debut album with tracks “Nobody Else” and “Mr. Man,” supported by Sasha, among other artists. It is a downbeat, atmospheric track with heavy bass grooves and a piano refrain. Concluding the first disc is Solarity’s “Symbols,” summarizing the ambience of the entire mix.

Jody Wisternoff takes up mixing duties for disc two. With over 20 years of experience behind the decks, one cannot simply ignore his flexibility and skill as a producer. He is a musician with an appreciation as well as an ear for quality music. One of the hottest tracks on the list is Lane 8’s “Be Mine,” a sun-kissed, sensual vibe with ambient vocals and lush synth pads. Delving into mid 90s jungle, Jody reworks classic “This Way” by Skanna, keeping the haunting vibes and sophisticated melodies of the original.

Jody’s reconstruction of Above & Beyond’s “Alchemy” might be one of the best on the whole compilation. He adds a deep bass groove around the vocals to create a musically enhanced deep house anthem. Another favorite is Jody’s reshape of Kahwe’s “Driving Me Wild.” He adds layers of melodic feel to create another dimension within the track. Jody’s musical talent throughout his mixing will have you fully submerged into disc two from start to finish.

James Grant and Jody Wisternoff were fine choices to craft the fifth installment of the Anjunadeep story. They understood that Anjunadeep 05 represents the diversity of the label, offering an exploration of the deeper waters of house music.
