Open from 11pm til 5am in the morning, Monkey Bar’s Halloween special - being showcased at the basement of hip hotel Omm in Barcelona - sees Perlon's Portable bring his live set to the masses, alongside the likes of Specke and more. Read on as he explains his emotional head space and his top 5 tracks...
Tell us about what projects you've been working on lately... I am always composing and working on music, right now I'm starting to work on a new Portable album, but the end if a long way off. More immediate is coming up is a 12 " for our label Südelectronic, due next year.
Your last release on Perlon was called 'A Deeper Love', what are your biggest loves in life? Music is the biggest love of my life. I just broke up with someone, so that and my best friends in Berlin are the loves are my life .
You grew up in South Africa, how did your relationship with music begin? As a teenager i was heavily influenced by the early Chicago house music, I taught myself the basics and just continued to refine my style into what it is now. Just the idea to begin and continue...
You've also lived in London and Lisbon and you're now based in Berlin, What are your favourite venues round the globe? Well there are so many, but If I would have to have 5, I'd say Plastic People, london, Panorama Bar, Berlin, About Blank, Berlin,
Your other moniker is Bodycode, how important it is it to have different aliases for creative expression? It is quite important, Bodycode is my vehicle to express my more techno, instrumental side and Portable is for my more experimental vocal lead projects, but not strickly so.
You always have the most amazing clothes, where do you buy/find a lot of your clothes? Mostly flea markets and vintage stores, often when playing in different cities throughout the world I make a point of visiting some flea markets if possible, i want to try barcelona's ones too when I'm there! Also there is a design label run by two friends of mine of Argentina and Chile called zetazepa http://www.zetazepa.com, and they make custom made clothes for me too.
What track would you like to... wake up to? I've just broken up,so I try to not listen to songs with lyrics right now.
...hear at peak time in the club?
...at the afterparty?
...on a good day?
...on a bad day?
What forthcoming projects do you have lined up? I am considering working with a dance theatre choreographer to score some music for he's show. And a track on Live at Robert Johnson's compilation.
Your about to play in Barcelona for Monkey Bar at the end of October, which always has incredible line ups, are there any particular records that you reckon will go off at Hotel Omm? I don't know really, never been there... I look forward to it!
