As someone who first got into electronic music by playing Trance at Raves in the late 1990’s it’s always felt a little insincere the way I blatantly tend to rag on Trance and some of the commercial EDM that’s alarming in its formulaic and uninspired nature. There was a time however, when Trance was about something more than knocking around a stadium full of people to predictable breakdowns following “epic” synths with vocals written at a first grade level. Paul Van Dyk apparently agrees, and since our careers have followed strikingly similar trajectories, I thought it was worth sharing.
