Ill Blu have been a permanent fixture on the UK funky scene, blending house, garage, 2step and more into a potently London-esque flavour. Coupled with affiliations with the mighty Rinse FM, Hyperdub and Nmbrs, they've surprisingly pricked up the ears of deep and tech house luminary Kerri Chandler, whose MadTech records (and new alternative-electronica label MTDL) is releasing their latest EP, Illusions. We caught with James and Darey to discuss their influences and their favourite classic tunes from the cross-pollinating house and garage scene...
Tell us about your new release on Madtech 'Illusions' the three tracks are quite different, what's the influence for each? When we made the tracks each time in the studio we were a in different mind frame musically, the common thread was whatever we made they had to exude energy. If you haven't guessed, the wire influenced the 'Omar' track, we were watching it and the quote came on we thought that quote would be sick to incorporate into a tune. We wanted to experiment with atmospheric sounds mixed with hard 808 bass.
We have been digging the house vibes a lot and have been playing quite a bit of house out at our shows, so we guess the influence for '2nd Nature' came from our shows. We always wanted to make a track that incorporated some breakbeat drums. We had the synth line already down and was searching for some new sounds for the melody. By accident we landed on a muted guitar and that inspired the western vibe on the intro and 'Tick Tok' was born.
What illusions (or delusions) do you think there are about the music industry to outsiders? A common misconception people may have about the music industry is that we love to rave all the time to the early hours of the morning, most people will go out and jam for a while and bounce, long gone are the days of staying all the way to the end of the night ha ha.
Obviously Madtech is house legend Kerri Chandler's label, What's your favourite track of his and why?
James: "You're In My System" is my favorite track by Kerri; it makes me just wanna dance. Top notch production I love the chords on it.
Dary: "Love Will Find a Way" is my favourite track by Kerri. Because I'm a soulful guy the mood fits with me perfectly.. top record..
What's the dynamic between the two of your when you're in the studio and when you're playing out? We are vibesy characters so we just bounce ideas of each other in the studio... one of us may start with drums and the other makes a riff or vice-versa. When we are DJing out we play and host with good understanding.
You guys experiment and encompass a lot of different styles, Do you think the time for purism is over? We would say the time for purism is not over but fusing different styles keeps music exciting, fresh and innovative , That's what we aim to do with our music when we write in the studio.
What producers have inspired you from a young age? Before getting into and producing house/bass we were into our hip hop real heavy. Guys like Premier, Swizz Beatz, Dennis Ferrer, Darkchild, Timbaland have been big influences on us growing up.
You played at Secretsundaze Go Bang! a couple of weeks ago, How did you find their first mini festival? It was a great event, they really done well with that. It was ram-jammed and the line up was great too. We got a nice vibe going in the room we was in, so it;s all good.
