Funk D'Void
Balance 022
Balance Music
The Balance Series is a groundbreaking set of compilations that continues to deliver solid mixes curated by impeccable talents. Previously, highly acclaimed mixes came from world class talents like Nic Fanciulli, James Holden, Joris Voorn, Will Saul and Deetron. Balance 22 is no different. Funk D’Void who’s also known as Francois Dubois (real name Lars Sandberg) pieces together this installment of the two-disc series by combining a forward-thinking sensibility to a sometimes nostalgic feeling collection of tracks that make for some great listening and somehow caters to several different tastes. Funk D’Void stated that, “I didn’t want too many of the latest hottest tracks in the mix, so I basically made a selection of moments that have had the biggest impact on me and attempted to weave them into a cohesive structure that might connect on the same level that I had experienced them. Every track has been edited by me so I wasn’t held back by overlong arrangements built for the club, opting instead for the immediate impact that could still be attained as one body of work.” As the talented Scot revels in these moments, the mix takes listeners on a journey that shows the timeless nature of the tracks he’s carefully selected.
Disc 1 builds slowly but picks up steadily by the fifth track which is Peter Dildo’s ‘Lucky Punch’ that sheds light on the impact of the Detroit techno sound on Funk D’Void’s musical stylings. At this point in the mix, the travel through time and space is immediately evident and we find ourselves in the midst of a real aural journey. Three other moments that stood out to me were ‘Lost Forever In A Happy Crowd- Exercise One and Matthew Jonson,’ Steve Rachmad’s edit of ‘The Chase,’ and Funk D’Void’s own remix of ‘A Very Different World.’
Disc 2 is worlds away from its sibling disc. The feeling shifts towards a more ambient and, at times, wandering sound that allows listeners to float away. However, there are certain moments throughout disc 2 that seem feel incongruous and leave me wanting more. Some noteworthy tracks to pay attention to on the second disc come from titans such as Joris Voorn, Space Dimension Controller, Joash, and Soundstream. This disc definitely highlights the artist’s confidence in stepping off the beaten path and into our outer consciousness.
Overall, Funk D’Void’s Balance 22 offers a little something for everyone with his unique and creative take on the mix and makes good use of the two-disc format to showcase separate areas of his musical perspective. The journey through the mix of tracks, both old and new, make it evident that Funk D’Void reigns supreme. Balance 22 follows suit with the rest of its predecessors, and Pulse very much looks forward to what is in store for Balance 23.
