Irish techno upstarts The Japanese Popstars are all about making arresting, thundering dance-floor hits that flit between electronic and acoustic instrumentation, and are pretty partial to making an anthem. The Popstars take elements of traditional, underground dance music and give them a heady, popular twist.
A widescreen sound that encompasses all manners of styles from rock to techno to electro and beyond, they've got a fair amount of hits under their belt and know all about belting them out to packed arenas. They even curated the Ibiza Music Summit Anthem with Chicago legend Green Velvet ('Matter of Time'). However, Pulse sat down with Gareth Donoghue - one half of the recently turned duo - to discover their favourite underground anthems and the songs that hold an instant identity....
Guy Gerber – Timing
"The first time I heard this was at a show we did in Belfast with Green Velvet. He played after us and this was his first track. I just thought it sounded so cool! I remember looking back up on stage from the dancefloor and seeing Curtis in his glasses and his white shirt and thinking it was all just badass. We played it this year at the Space opening. It still sounds incredible."
Daphni - Ye Ye
"This one is pretty recent, but what really makes it stand out for us, is that it sounds like nothing else. I think the guy from Caribou is behind it and the first time I heard it was in Ibiza last year I think. I was on a mission to find out what it was straight away."
Vitalic - Second Lives
"Vitalic is such a stand out artist. We loved his second album Flashmob and this is one of many standout tracks on that album. The first time I heard this track I was driving my car and I had to literally pull over so I could take it all in. It’s so good!"
Surkin - White Knight Two
"Again this track has real identity. At the time it came out so many people were trying to copy the Ed Banger sound, but this was a real look back to the 90's, but with a modern twist. Ladies love this track, its official."
The Japanese Popstars - Matter of Time
"I guess we have to do this. It’s our new track that we did with Green Velvet for the Ibiza Music Summit Anthem. As a musical moment, it’s kind of a return to the underground for us and its been getting big plays from Digweed, Francois K and Laurent Garnier. Check it out."
