Ellie Hewitt, - on 6/9/12
Krystal Klear has been tearing up the airways in the early hours of the morning on Rinse FM and has just had a release out on Kerri Chandler's MadTech. His spine tingling new release has a distinct 90s disco house feel that has the kids moving again and prior to that he's been churning out the best Boogie, New Jack Swing, Instru Hip-Hop and House this side of the Atlantic. Pulse's Ellie Hewitt caught up with him about what he thinks people are doing when they are listening in to his radio show [shagging he suspects], where he likes to spend time in his home town of Dublin and G's.
You’re new release on MadTech ‘More Attention/My Love is Burning’ feat Jenna G has a real 90s feel, would you say the 90s is having a real resurgence for music? Em I dont really know, I mean maybe it is but whether it is or not doesnt really bother me and it didnt play any influence in the record I mean any house track I've ever released or produced I try to develop some of that 90s house energy that initiated my love for the music in the first place.
What was it like working with Jenna G? AMAZING; Jenna (for the want of a better phrase) is a total G - Super talented and is great to work with.
What’s your favourite era of (past) music and why? The late 70's early 80's disco era in NY without a doubt between how things were changing politically to what the djs were doing it all ties in together and theres something about that period I get super excited about.
MadTech is house legend Kerri Chandler’s label – what record labels were important to you when you first got into music and why? I've never really been a label nerd to be honest and Im still not,I wish I was to an extent just cause some gaps in my record collection would be filled but Im very particular in certain ways so I rarely think so much about the label as much as I would the artist BUT having said that when it comes to diggin for disco/boogie.etc then the label to me plays a big part: Prelude, Venture, Pretty Pearl, Westend.etc
So you’ve got your show on Rinse FM every week in the early hours of the morning, what do you imagine people are doing when they are listening in? Sleeping or shagging [laughs].
Top track you’d want to hear: In the club? Rustie - After Light
At the after party? Prince - I wanna be Your Lover
In the middle of the day? Alicia Meyers - I Wanna Thank You
On a chilled one? Boz Scaggs - Lowdown
What things in life would you say are truly crystal clear? I just cant help but feeling like no matter how I answer this question that Im gonna come off lame [laughs] so Im gonna have to leave that one up to the readers I guess.
You’re from Dublin, where are you based now? Based in Manchester UK now.
Where are your top places to hang out in Ireland? Harry Byrnes for a few guinneys, Dun Laoghire Pier for a chill, All City Records for a catch up and Sth William St for a scrann.
What does the next few months hold for you? Alot of gigging and writing.
