Rising star Surrender! is a Turkish born producer and DJ, ans also a rising entity in disco and house music. After reeleasing his self-titled album on La Bombe this month - following on from his huge Volute single - the man they call Ulas is ready to introduce himself to you, through an exclusive mix for Pulse Radio. Read on below as he talks basic studio equipment, vintage drums and his inventor father...
Welcome Surrender! Tell us a little about yourself? My name is Ulas, I was born in 1989 in Turkey. I have been producing music for 4 years.
Part of your childhood was spend in the Netherlands now based in Turkey how have they two countries effect to music you produce and listen it? I fell in love with electronic music in Netherlands. As a kid I used to listen to Dutch radio and record the tracks that I liked to cassettes. I had about 200 cassettes with endless hours of electronic music. When I came back to Turkey, I drifted away from electronic music and got into really heavy metal music. Black metal, death metal. But around the age17 my love for electronic music came back stronger than ever.
Your father was an inventor, was he always pushing you to do something creative and experimental with your life? He definitely thought me to think outside of the box and I grew up with the idea of "everything is possible". I was never pushed to be creative and experimental but when you see someone close to you (specially your dad) do some really, really amazing things you get inspired and what you see as normal turns into boring. That's when you try to push yourself into new things and experimenting.
Your album has just been released on La Bombe, which is very exciting. When did you first start on it? How happy are you with it? I started working on it a few months after the release of Locate EP. It took me about 9 months to finish it and it was the most challenging thing I did music wisely. I am extremely happy with the results and this album made me grow as a producer.
The music you produce has shades of Daft Punk to it, how inspiring are they to you? They are really inspiring and it's really not possible to be not inspired by them.
You're receiving support from huge artists such as A-Trak, Aeroplane and Groove Armada along with popping up in various Beatport top 10's, how much of a confidence boost is this? Probably the biggest confidence boost! This is what makes me want to continue and push myself even harder with producing.
Can we expect any collaborations with these industry giants? I hope so. Fingers crossed.
What are you feeling at the minute in terms of music? Right now it really feels a little bit boring to me. Maybe it's just because we have so many varieties that we can choose from and there seems to be always something new going on. Things tend to come fast and go fast these days.
What can we expect in the coming months? I produced a new EP which will come out after the album release and I did a few remixes as well that I can't talk about right now. Also a collaboration!
