James Huxley, London - United Kingdom - on 27/9/12
Deeply rooted in the Italian rave culture of the mid '90s, London based and Italian born producer Baunz has been exploring all manners of house music for the best part of the noughties. With a raft of tunes released this year across Moda Black and More Music, besides having his storming track '808s, Pausetapes and Other Shit' included on Huxley's mix for 1Trax and Congaloid's Miami sampler, Baunz is on fire, sporting his vocal led, harmonized grooves at an alarmingly rapid pace.
Here, Baunz offers us an excluisve mix (scroll down for tracklist) and picks his top 7 favourite Italian electronic classics, to give an idea of the styles that have inspired his rich sound. Over to you, Baunz...
"All the tunes I included in this list have meant - and still mean - a lot to me. They sort of describe what Italian producers of the past have given me in terms of confidence, passion and inspiration. Even in that native country of mine, where the electronic music scene was meaningless compared to the folk music industry, these producers have broken all the barriers and have become legends. This is the time they deserve recognition."
Frank'O Moiraghi feat. Amnesia - Feel my Body
"I guess I've always had a sweet spot for hypnotic, loopy music and this was no exception. At the time crate digging was hard as there were no shops and not much movement so you would get this off the radio. I had a giggle when I first noticed Franco's effort to get an American sounding name. It still cheers me up when I have the blues."
Chase - ©1978 (Giorgio Moroder)
"He is the absolute father of techno and dance in general. My sister used to play a lot of music some of which was from Orbital and some by Giorgio Moroder. When I see them, I will ask them if I can have my frontal lobe back."
Black Box - Ride on Time (1989)
"This is an amazing classic, in Italy. It has been played everywhere, every day at least once, since it was released. I am convinced there was nobody in the whole peninsula, that had realised that those were vocal samples, nor that the girl at the gigs was lip synching (and it wasn't her voice in the first place, either). When the title came up in the corner of the screen, I laugh because the very producers had failed to understand the lyrics and had gotten the title wrong. Brings back loads of beach concession party memories."
Leo Anibaldi - Muta LP Part 3 (1993)
"I've always been very close to Leo as we both sank our roots in Rome's pirate radio\party scene. He used to be into my music (even though it was very different from his general taste) and this has always made me proud. This tune was strategically played every Sunday morning in a yearly event in a squat in the outskirts of Rome."
Max Durante - Digital Dream
"Another one of the Roman All Stars of electronic pioneering is Mr.Durante. I respect all of his work, especially these classic dark electro bombs that still send shivers down my spine. IF and Lory D were amongst my favourites as well."
Santos - Camels (original music video)
"Got into this when CD was the weapon of choice for mixes and immediately fell in love with Santos' amazing loopy style. I was officially hooked, and I loved it. He got me into the whole Mantra records thing that was totally bossin’ the house\breaks scene."
John Acquaviva & Madox - Running From feat. Tommie Sunshine (Gnewkow & Norm Remix)
"Madox aka Riva Starr was leading the breaks scene at the time, everybody loved his music, and I did too. I was shocked when I found out he was making his tunes in the box while I was still going oldschool, those breaks were astonishing."
