As dance music has proceeded to blow up in the USA (how many times has that been uttered this year?), what's been interesting to observe is old guard magazine Rolling Stone covering it all. Traditionally a rock rag, the title has still touched on electronic music in some form over the years - one recalls its focus on bands like Prodigy and The Chemical Brothers when electronica took a hold in America for a brief stint in the 90s. However witnessing Deadmau5 on the cover of RS just a few weeks back was quite an odd feeling indeed.
The latest bit of dance-related content to hit their pages is a feature whereby the magazine lists what it deems are 'The 30 Greatest EDM Albums Of All Time', which has, if anything, ruffled quite a few readers' feathers over in their comments section. Truth be told, it's a mix of deserved placemakers like Daft Punk, Carl Craig, Michael Mayer, Aphex Twin and Burial perched alongside some rather bizarre choices like Madonna and LCD Soundsystem. While we're happy to acknowledge Madonna's involvement and contribution to dance music (even if it was mainly producers like William Orbit and Stuart Price who were responsible), to name her album 'Ray Of Light' as one of the greatest of all time is, well, preposterous. Then of couse there's the obligatory American mainstream entries from Skrillex and Deadmau5.
Check out the list below and read up on what RS has to say on each here.
