For an island known more for it's peaktime house and techno, We Love resident and After Dark's head honcho Mr Doris, offers a breath of fresh air mixing up genres in the true balaeric spirit. Ellie Hewitt talks with him about After Dark memories, Red Bull, and Ibiza downtime. As well as that, not only was he kind enough to give us an exlclusive mix, but also a download of his re-edit of Zalmac - What's In It For Me alongside Ben Santiago. You lucky, lucky people.
As a curator and resident DJ of ‘After Dark’ at We Love… Space you must have some pretty interesting party memories, are there any particular ones you can tell us about? Far too many to mention & most would quite honestly be un-printable to save grace for the names mentioned. Although I have to admit the After Dark opening party this year for We Love... Space was eceptionally memorable. We had The Nextmen, Mo'Funk & myself behind the 6 decks jamming & scratching away while Ian C was on the electronic drums creating what can only be called a spectacle for the eyes & ears. It was grand.
What would you say Ibiza has over every other global location? Almost year-round good weather, beautiful beaches & a concentration of people that are interested in listening to some of the best music the world has to offer.

What three tracks would you say best explain your sound and your ethos behind music? To be honest this is such a tough question for me to answer - I'd find it hard to whittle it down to 20... but here are 5 tracks that push the right buttons on the 'After Dark' dancefloor.
Shantel - Bucovina (Haacksman & Haacksman Soca Bogle Mix) - Atlantic Jaxx
Boozoo Bajou - Killer feat. Topcat - Studio !K7
Tito Puente - Oye Como Va (Bongo Edit) - EMI
Mr Doris & D'Funk - Hit The Yellowbrick Road - Grits n' Gravy
Ripgroove - Double 99 - Satalite Records
Having played with a huge array of artists at Space, what top tips would you give to aspiring DJs and producers who dream of playing on the terrace one day? Well if it's playing alongside me (& this goes for pretty much all the rooms at We Love... Space) the dj or artist has to show something different from the norm. Tech house is a no no.
What do you do in your months off from Ibiza? Well i'm actually based here all year but I tour quite extensively throughout the world. Last winter I was touring the Pacific (including Australia, Indonesia & Asia), the Middle East & Europe. This winter is already looking much the same - I'm already set to head back to Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, North America & Mexico as well as quite a few European excursions planned. I feel very priveleged to be able to travel with my work as it really is essential for me to discover new places & meet new people in my life. When not on the road I'm in the studio either creating new music or mixing compilation albums.
Some of your productions have been used for adverts by Red Bull and MTV, what other milestones in your career do you feel have shaped you? I'm not sure I'd say the use of my music by a multi-national company to advertise their wares is a milestone in my carrer! But thankyou anyway! Looking back I think the biggest milestone other than me choosing to take a musical path as a career is being involved so much with the We Love... family - of which the latter would possibly not be an option & has definitely helped make Ibiza my full-time home.
Being a resident DJ in Ibiza for the Summer, what secret haunts can you tell us about that you enjoy hanging out in? Now they wouldn't be secrets if I started telling everybody would they?
DJ Cheeba returns to 'After Dark' at We Love... Space, Ibiza from DJ Cheeba on Vimeo.
What did you listen to growing up? Like my musical tastes now - I listened to a smorgasbord of music from jazz and latin to hip hop and everything in between, even a bit of heavy metal thrown in there somewhere!
Would you like to still be DJing at Space in twenty years? Any predictions for the future of the island? I'm not sure if it would be up to me! Hopefully I'll still be involved in the music industry to some extent - I cannot see my life without music & dj'ing is a big part of that for me. When it comes to predictions for the island - let's just say I hope that the musical opening of minds keeps on happening.
