Yesterday marks the day that the internet killed Gotye. According to CNN’s iReport - a feature that lets anyone with an internet connection post news - the Australian singer shot himself and died, in a bizarre and pretty morbid fake report.
CNN iReport ran this statement:
"At 4:32 AM EST, it was reported that Gotye had shot himself in the head with a 9mm handgun. He was pronounced dead at 4.45AM, and the investigation concluded that the cause of death was suicide. It was confirmed shortly after by family and friends. He was quickly taken to the Central Montmorency Hospital, but died from his injuries shortly after. His family has stated that they plan a closed funeral."
Gotye confirmed his absolute aliveness, by tweeting “I’m not dead #pinkalbumtitles”, a reference to an album by the singer Pink.
The short-lived internet death did provide a lot of “Somebody that we used to know” jokes though, while they lasted.
