Diplo is a force to be reckoned with and this producer/DJ continues to show his versatility in many ways by releasing music from such diverse collaborators as Usher, Chris Brown, Azealia Banks and many others. Despite these commitments he continues to push the envelope with his solo career as well as his wildly successful side project Major Lazer with the like minded (but also still white) Switch.
His newest album Express Yourself dropped yesterday and all six tracks bring his talent and distinctive style to the forefront. The sound is a bit of a departure from his previous LPs and bears more resemblance to his Major Lazer efforts. Incorporating different music styles such as dancehall, electro, dubstep, bounce and countless others into each carefully crafted track he makes each record into a unique masterpiece.
The title track Express Yourself was released three months ago and is by far the most interesting record in the package. The video is a clear homage to Diplo’s fascination with New Orleans bounce music. Having visited New Orleans three times, the video is a pretty accurate representation of the raw energy that continues to course through the city’s veins despite having been devastated by 2005’s hurricane Katrina. It might even inspire you to drop it low. Go for it.
