Deadbeat has built a solid reputation on his ability to infuse elements of traditional dub into the contemporary sounds of house and techno, but on Lazy Jane, a collaboration with Danuel Tate, he decides to go for pure dub vibes. Mad Professor would be proud. From the sparse, half-time drums (complete with reverbed rim shots and subtle closed hats), to the subtle bass stabs, guitar licks, dub chords and vocoded Rasta vocal, this is pure Jamaican couch music at its best. Play this early in the night at a dubstep party and watch the true heads give you a nod and a smile of approval.
For those who prefer their beats a bit more up-tempo, the 909 Dub on the flip offers up some low down, chunky techno vibes. The bassline is produced from the same sounds as the original, but is re-programmed so that it’s a little less sporadic and rises and falls in pitch, creating an infectious groove when its combined with the driving 909 kicks, subtle claps and open hat rhythms. The dub chords, vocal and guitar licks from the original also make an appearance, but again are chopped-up and effected so that they fit in with the dub techno vibe of the remix. The chords especially are a real treat, echoing slightly off-beat, creating a more freeform, live feel to the track which is a key element of good dub techno.
