From intimate basement parties in Dalston, to humongous warehouse events and festival appearances, Disco Bloodbath (known to their mums as Damon Martin and Ben Pistor) have become synonymous with impeccable music selection and sweaty all-night dancing. Bloodbath have just launched a brand new label with the first release from Damon himself, It Ain't Right is already getting heat in all the right places. Dalston Superstore guvnor and former Bloodbather, Dan Beaumont, spoke with Damon about upcoming plans, festival memories and fantasy record signings.
You've just kicked off a Bloodbath label... What made you start it and how long will it stay vinyl only? The label has been on the cards for a while now. We've met so many people making great music through doing the club night, and have spent the last couple of years working on our own productions so it just seemed like a natural progression. We will be doing digital releases about 2 or 3 weeks after the vinyl. Vinyl is our first love but, being from New Zealand and still having DJ friends back there, I am aware that in some parts of the world it's not that easy to get hold of records without paying a fortune in shipping costs.
The first release is your own track. It's had a pretty amazing reception. How did you choose the remixes? We've known both artists for a while now - Waze & Odyssey played at our fifth birthday party earlier this year and Legendary Children are Dalston basement party kindred spirits. They both just seemed like a perfect fit for the track. We knew that we'd end up with two very different but equally amazing remixes.
What's next for Disco Bloodbath records? Up next we have a release from a new project called Hand Plant which is Ben Pistor, the other half of Disco Bloodbath, collaborating with Sam Watts from Maxxi Soundsystem and then we have something coming from G&S (aka Nadia Ksaiba and Matt Waites). All of the releases sound totally different from each other, which is what we've always wanted the label to be like. We have some ace remixes lined up from Capracara, Hardway Bros and Jamie Blanco as well.
You're playing at Superstore’s Lovebox afterparty for Wet N Wild. What’s your favourite Lovebox memory? It has to be the year that Disco Bloodbath co-hosted NYC Downlow with Horse Meat Disco.
What has been your most memorable festival DJ experience? One year DJing at the Big Chill playing back to back with you, Dan. Our set time started in daylight and finished in darkness. I remember playing the absolutely massive It's A Fine Line edit of G.B. And The Tracks - Woman as the sun was setting and just as the track reached its crescendo they set this giant wooden tower on fire. It was all a bit epic really.
If you had a time machine and a cosmic chequebook what three records would you sign to Disco Bloodbath?
Kraftwerk - Computer World
Cappuccino - Hell Dance With Me
Jamie Principle - Your Love
Damon Martin plays at Wet N Wild at Dalston Superstore on Friday 15th June from 9pm – 3am alongside Deepgroove, Nicky G and a special guest.
