Cocoon Heroes, Opening Party
Monday, June 11th 2012
Arriving at 2am the dance floor was already littered with up for it techno enthusiasts and DC10 washouts. The vibe was slightly uneasy, there was a sense that people didn't quite know what to expect. How had Cocoon matured since last years Ibiza season and what musical direction was the night likely to take? Before arriving at the Amnesia we had been listening to Compilation L, the latest release on Cocoon Records, to get a feel for what musical theme the night might yield.
Once inside the club we headed for the main room where Cassy was in command of the infamous DJ booth. There was no smooth intro or warming build up present here. Cassy already had the crowd encapsulated into her straight up brand of rocking techno. She dropped Evil Eddie Richards - Chicken or Beef on top of a hot and sweaty dance floor indicating that there was to be no messing around, the party was on!
High above the dancefloor we saw an 'up for it' Sven Vath having a cheeky drink on the VIP area before his set. We used this as a reminder to check out the Terrace for a bit of Sascha Dive action before Mr Vath was due on main room duties.
The expansive Terrace was rammed, yet it accommodated the additional square-footage needed to dance freely within your own personal space, a limitation of the crowded main room. After witnessing the echoing roar of the Terrace we scurried back to the main room where Sven had just arrived in the booth at a minute to 3am. The excitable label boss was sporting a floral shirt and looked raring to go with a drink in hand. He pumped up the crowd with his signature hands in the air gestures and then threw down Maetrik's Reason to a backdrop of hissing Co2 cannons and screaming ravers.
The direction then shifted towards the contemporary side of Cocoon's catalogue, the recently released Paul Ritch track - Wall to Wall (available on Compilation L) justified an elaborate appearance from Kyroman whose presence really needs to be seen to be believed!
Sven's 'Into The Magic' night certainly lived up to its premise, the electrifying atmosphere combined with the sheer variety of house and techno wizardry on display made for an unforgettable night.
After 13 years Cocoon is still as hot as ever …and the best bit? It's just getting started.
