Portuguese five piece, Buraka Som Sistema, have become a firm favourite on the festival and touring circuit over the last few years with their lively percussive sets and ghetto bass grooves. Having just released their latest EP of remixes of the third single, Tira O Pe, taken from their sophomore album of 2011 and ahead of the long Jubilee weekend, who better to give us the lowdown on one of Europe's most lovely cities, Lisbon? Born and bred in Portugal's capital city, Buraka Som Sistema run us through their fave hangouts; from cafes to clubs, record shops to bars.
Café: with a view
The top floor terrace at Bairro Alto Hotel
Praça Luís de Camões 2 1200-243 Lisboa
Here you can fall in love with the city. This place has one of the best views over the Tagus River and the 25 Abril Bridge. We suggest you visit this terrace in the afternoon, to witness the sunset from that spot. It´s just beautiful. The hotel is located in one of our favorite areas, the Bairro Alto - our bohemian quarter, a neighborhood that entails a fair number of art galleries, record and bookshops, restaurants, art schools, cafés and design shops. At night is where all the fun happens - you can find hundreds of people ranging from the age of 14 to 40 gathering outside in the streets filled with pints of beer or mojitos. Bairro Alto is the extension of one of Lisbon's most visited areas - Chiado, and consequently this neighborhood has become the right place for any modern, trendy and fashionable person to go.
Bar: MUSICBOX and Pensão Amor
Rua Nova do Carvalho (Cais do Sodré)
This bar/club offers an electronic music variety that puts to shame the largest number of clubs in Lisbon. The place does not only attract hipsters, you also get punk rock kids, hip hop heads and people that really don't care what kind of music the DJ's is playing as long as it’ s good and fresh! The drinks are affordable, normally the entrance is free, they only charge when there is an international DJ performing. The best thing about this spot is that it´s located at Rua Nova do Caravalho, know for their strip clubs and escort bars - right next to Pensão do Amor (Love Pension) an old brothel that recently reopened bringing a bunch of cool shops, hair saloons, a bookstore and restaurants, into the building. The whole street gained a new glow and the city responded well.
Bookstore: LER DEVAGAR at LX Factory (Alcantra)
Rua Rodrigues de Faria 103 Lisboa
This bookstore is a multi-functional space. It started as a bookstore with a piano, curated by Ler Devagar Bookstore (read slowly bookstore) formerly located in Bairro Alto. They had to leave their old location and for a while they strolled without any fix place until they contacted the owner of an abandoned building which used to be a munitions and war equipment factory in the oriental part of the city. He allowed them to occupy the place without paying any rent, but their time there came to an end soon and they left. This bookstore new home is at LX Factory a place for art and ideas, you can spend all night there. In the bookstore you can find almost everything, they are also specialized in art and cinema books.
Livraria TEMA - Avenida Liberdade 9-lj 1
A very tiny magazine shop at the beginning of Avenida da Liberdade, known as Lisbon’ s Champs-Élysées filled with designer stores like Armani, Louis Vuitton and D&G. This magazine shop is a small corridor whose walls are covered with magazines. They have almost all the good international mags but there are no chairs. We are wondering why and will ask next time we visit them! The Hard Rock Café is right opposite to this magazine shop, in case you've miss it.
LUX at Cais da Pedra
Avenida Infante Dom Henrique 73 1100-365 Lisboa
LUX is just the most beautiful club in town. Two floors on the shore of the Tagus river, the whole place is a tribute to good design and great music. Located at Cais de Pedra in the Santa Apolonia neighborhood, a very hip and trendy area thanks to Manuel Reis, an amazing entrepreneur and visionary who transformed Lisbon’s nightlife back in the 80´s. There you can find Bica do Sapato - one of the best restaurants in the city; Flur - an indie record shop; Loja da Atalaia- Furniture boutique; Nord - a design shop specialized in scandinavia products; DeliDelux - a gourmet grocery shop that also has a beautiful café where you can have an amazing brunch and Casanova - our favourite pizzeria where you can have a late dinner until 2.00 am. By the way, John Malkovich is one of the partners of the Lux project.
Vera Cortês Art Agency at Av. 24 de Julho, 54, 1º E
We are big fans of this lady. She's one of the most dynamic persons in the Portuguese art scene. In 2005 she opened this non-gallery inside a beautiful downtown apartment facing Lisbon's waterfront avenue. The spirit behind the agency is an open house where artists, the public, collectors and friends can drop by to see artists' works, referring to catalogues or simply chat about art, the universe and everything else. Not only can the Agency artists use this place to exhibit their work, but is also an invitation for artists to enter into the Portuguese art world.
TABERNA IDEAL at Rua da Esperança 112-114 (Santos)
Food in Lisbon is absolutely divine! There's a new generation of chefs opening their own restaurants and changing the way the Portuguese eat by reinventing the traditional cuisine with a modern twist. Two of our favorite chefs are José Avillez and Henrique Sá Pessoa but we recommend that you visit something less fancy so you can have an idea about how good the food is in this city, like Tasca do Manel, Bar da Velha Senhora and Taberna Ideal. Also their little cousin Petiscaria Ideal, located right next door, took the "tapas" concept to another level.
Rua da Escola Politecnica and D. Pedro V Street (Principe Real)
Even though Bairro Alto, Chiado and Avenida da Liberdade are still the places where people usually go to look for shops, we think Principe Real neighborhood is where you can find the most avant-guard and cool portuguese designers, from Alexandra Moura to Lidija Kolovrat and also some new multi-brands stores that are turning the area into the place to be when it comes to fashion.
