Pure Ivy Radio launched with mixes from local hero Alison Wonderland, followed by German legend Thomas Gold. Now, Episode 3 is brought to you by Ivy resident DJ and Pure Ivy Radio head-honcho Digital Love, AKA Telly Maragopoulos. In conjunction for his mix for the series, we caught up with the Sydney DJ to find out a little of his past, a little about what lies ahead for him and what's going on in the world of Digital Love production wise at present. Get set for Pure Ivy Radio Episode 3 - hosted exclusively on Pulse Radio.
What happened to your Mindgutter DJ duo project with Anna? Mindgutter was great fun and we definitely had some great experiences over the years playing at some pretty amazing shows. We got to support some huge acts including Nero, Paul Kalkbrenner and Proxy. Still best buddies with Anna but she has moved to Newcastle to continue her studies. Since moving, we’ve both developed solo careers due to our geographical situation.
Were you DJing before you met Anna? I was bedroom djing for only a few weeks when Anna and I decided to start a dj duo. My first ever gig was with Anna at YU (now SOHO) to a monster crowd. Definitely was the most nerve racking experience I’ve had to deal with in a while.
How did you guys meet? We were both studying Psychology at Sydney University and were in classes together and became good friends. We both had a passion for clubbing and dance music so one day during exams, we met up to exchange study notes but instead procrastinated by talking about music and made the decision to dj together.
How did you become involved with running Pure Ivy Radio? I was having a chat to Graham Cordery who is the head promoter of Pure Ivy and Director of Experience Entertainment. When I told him I was off to have a mix with Anna Lunoe on FBi Radio for Sunsets, he learned that I was a radio presenter. He asked me to put together a proposal for a new show called Pure Ivy Radio and the rest is history.
What makes Ivy such a special venue as a nightclub? Ivy is great because it’s so versatile and always has an “up for it” crowd. It’s one of the few places that I play at that is still pumping when lights come on because it’s time to close.
Tell us how you came to co-produce Hera Salinas’ new single Make Me Feel. I remixed a track for her last single which she really loved. From that, she asked that I help produce her new single. I got together an amazing vocalist Jasmine Anderson and sound engineer Dean Belcastro and put together a great track.
What equipment or programs do you use to produce? Ableton, Sylenth, Komplete 7, Mashine with a Korg R3 kicker.
What else can we expect on the production front from Digital Love in the future? I’ve just finished off a remix for pop-diva “Paulini” which should be out pretty soon. Got some originals that are simmering but I might make some Deep House under my “Space Junk” alias first.
Tell us about your music for Pure Ivy Radio Episode 3. How did you go about approaching the mix? I wanted to put something together that represented what I play at Pure Ivy but with a bit more edge. I also wanted to add a bit of nostalgia by whipping some classic tracks together with some crazy tunes that are reminiscent of Vegas and Ibiza. I’ve had the honour of going to Ibiza twice now so a bit of that mayhem is represented in this mix.
And your upcoming set at Ivy, what can punters expect from your set? Rapid fire mixing and some really big tracks! I’ll be closing the main stage after Ember so my number one goal is to have people going ape till the music stops.
Name three tracks not included in your mix that are tickling your ear drums at present. Deadmau5 – Cthulhu2, Dawson – Sohno, Moguai – Mpire
