Dubstep star Rusko has teamed up with rap legends Cypress Hill for a five-track collaborative EP titled, Cypress X Rusko. Recorded over a six month period in the States, the EP will be released in early April. Cypress Hill’s B-Real had this to say about the collaboration: “We’ve always been the type of group to take chances on doing something radically different than what people expect from us. So this carries with the tradition of us going out of the box. If it’s not something that we embrace then we don’t dare mess with it and this is something we fell right into the pocket of.”
You can listen to a preview of a track from the EP, Roll It, Light It, below.
Cypress Hill were apparently rather nervous about first performing the tracks live, with Sen Dog stating, “I’m thinking we’re completely out of our realm here” when thinking back to when Rusko brought him and B-Real on stage during one of his gigs. Luckily the reaction from the crowd was “deafening and unanimously positive”.
Could this be the beginning of a whole new genre? Or are we just coming full circle with things tweaked slightly differently? One can't help but feel it's more of the latter than the former.
This isn't the first instance of the dubstep world colliding with other genres. Only recently the behemoth that is Skrillex hooked up with nu-metal veterans Korn for an entire album of....well, 'pain' is the only way to describe it really.
Hopefully Rusko and Cypress Hill's efforts will be more credible and listenable. What do you think?
