Dexter Kane - Hook Line And Sinker

Akbal's 55th release sees them enlisting the talents of London up and comer, Dexter Kane.

Akbal Music

Mexico: the home of Chocolate, Jalapeños and Akbal Music. This small independent label strives and indeed succeeds to promote the best in underground electronic music as their output thus far has seen them drop bombs from the likes of Jay Tripwire, Huxley, Dzeta N'Basile and Dexter Kane to name but a few. Their previous releases have seen them receive strong positive feedback from a wide range of artists across the board with Steve Bug, Davide Squillace, Hot Chip, Tim Green all supporting their irrefutable beats and with their keen eye for originality, their army of followers is guaranteed to expand.

Akbal's latest EP, the 55th in their growing discography, comes from Dexter Kane and is aptly named Hook Line and Sinker as each track is oozing with infectious grooves and contagious synths that you'll want to snap it up like Jaws following a hunger strike. At first listen, this EP may be broadly cast away as run-of-the-mill material but if you give it the time it so rightly deserves you'll find that each track is very neatly ridding the line between deep and jacking house and does so to great effect.

The first track on this EP, I Got Soul is a funky little number that wouldn't go amiss in the Hot Creations catalogue as it's modish synth loop will show. Complete with little vocal stabbings, this four to the floor track will undoubtedly get a dance floor bubbling nicely. Where as It's Late has been cleverly crafted for those late night work outs when it's time to take things a little deeper. With it's scintillating synth stabs floating aloft a series of vocals samples and a deep resounding bass line that comes into its own very well indeed. Last and by no means least, 9th March, in my opinion the true gem on the release, is a future sounding house jam with intricate drum samples cleverly layered on top of a grooving bass line once again borrowing from the en vogue sound coming out of the UK at present, a track that should find itself in the bags of many discerning DJs with ease.

This EP will surely gain Akbal Music as well as Dexter Kane yet even more supporters, as each track is a sweet slab of house music. With a label casually doing their own thing, I am excited to see where else they will take us. They may be based far away in the Riviera Maya in Mexico, yet they have, with great ease and finesse, managed to bring us the sound of now focused entirely for the dance floor.
