Subsonic head-liner Apparat released his highly anticipated new album The Devil's Walk last week, which you can stream in full here.
Apparat will be hitting Australian shores in December for Australia's most original and boutique music festival Subsonic. Following our coverage of the Subsonic Launch Party on Pulse, we have collated an essential DJ mix and video guide of the most exciting Subsonic festival acts to lead you through the three days of laidback beats.
Dedicated to deep space electronic music, it's bringing together an amazing line-up of international and local artists. And what better environment to hear them in than the picturesque surrounds of Riverwood Downs Mountain Valley Resort, three hours from Sydney. I, for one, am also getting pretty excited about the VIP luxury camping (hot showers!) by the crystal clear Karuah River. You think this is the perfect music festival? I haven't even mentioned the fact that it's BYO.
German electronic musician Apparat has been running the Berlin based record label “Shitkatapult” together with T.Raumschmiere since 1999. Starting out with dance floor-oriented techno, he later started to create ambient music and recently became “more interested in designing sounds than beats”.
He received the Qwartz Dancefloor, Electronic Music Award in 2009. His fourth album The Devil’s Walk was released last week on September 27 2011. It was in the town of Sayulita during a lengthy Mexico trip to escape the cold of Berlin. The title is a nod to the poem of the same name by English romantic poet Percy Byssth Shelley. As well as Subsonic, Apparat will also be playing Hi-Fi bar in Melbourne as part of his Australian album tour. Check out the official video for Song of Los off the new album below.
Max Cooper's techno ranges from stark electronica remixes of huge bands like Hot Chip and Au Revoir Simone to the fuzzy, buzzing dancefloor sound of his breakthrough Serie releases. But it's all, he says, inspired by his need to "match the emotions in the head with the emotion that can come out of the monitors". The result is a decidedly "less-is-more" minimalist approach to music.
Before breaking through with underground hit Harmonisch Serie in 2009, he'd already had releases on more than 20 labels and been DJing for more than 10 years. Cooper still holds down epic seven year residencies at English clubs Firefly and Stealth. At Subsonic, listen out for tracks from his two latest EPs Empirisch and Empirisch Remixes put out in August.
Techno King, Phil Kieran from Belfast is primarily a club DJ. He's been in the upper echelons of the electronic music game for more than a decade, but has only released his debut album Shh under his own name in 2009. Known for rocking clubs and releasing a string of killer twelves, Belfast-based Phil has hooked up with German powerhouse Cocoon in recent times. Earlier this year he put out the EP Free Yourself featuring Green Velvet.
From roots in early nineties Parisian rave culture, this multi instrumentalist DJ has set on a formidable trajectory since Laurent Garnier invited him to put out his debut single Playground in 1997. Alongside definitive producers like St.Germain and Mr.Oizo, Alexkid has played a pivotal role in sculpting the profile of French electronic music. Now based in Berlin he has lent remixes to everyone from Damian Lazarus to George Michael, Phonique to Crookers, Sasse and Kiki, Spencer Parker to Nina Kraviz.
