Pangaea: Hex/Fatalist

The UK garage & house producer and Hessle Audio co-founder, Pangaea, drops a new two track EP of demented funk on Hemlock Recordings.

Capable of making sub-bass do just about anything he desires, Pangaea is to low-end what Hardfloor are to the 303: its overlord. His newest slab of wax on Hemlock is possibly his toughest release to date, showcasing both his lighter, funkier side and his ability to craft darker vibes, but both tracks are unashamedly heavy dancefloor killers.

Hex makes the word “demented” work hard to describe it accurately. Taking in elements of UK garage with the two-step rhythms, speed garage with the fuzzy detuned bassline and chopped-up ragga vocal samples, this is about as bizarre as sub-slayers come. Possibly a little too “out there” for newcomers to the genre, but well and truly “out there” enough for bass veterans looking for something a little more challenging but still guaranteed to destroy a dancefloor.

Fatalist is a little more in line with what typically comes to mind when one thinks of “dubstep”, though that’s only in comparison to Hex. In comparison to 90% of the dubstep out there, this is still definitely somewhere quite left of the centre. And that’s why it rocks. Tribal drums and super-deep bass hits pound away underneath flat kicks and heavily-reverbed claps (or are they snares? Who cares, they sound rad), propelling the tune along in between brief, noisy interludes.

As I said, probably not for the casual dubstep fan, but definitely for the garage enthusiast looking for a challenge.
