Aztec Records began in 2010. Created by Ariel and Laura, the label aims to release electronic pop tracks and albums from artists who are creative, funky and overlooked by the mainstream. With a focus on great live acts, the label releases Take Me Away from Nina today and delivered an exclusive mixtape to Pulse to sum up what it's all about. This is what Ariel, Laura and Nina had to say about the journey so far.
Pulse: If you were writing the musical manifesto for Aztec, what would you say? Aztec: Aztec Records, an Electro-Pop independent label. We love great melodies over pumping beats.
What really excites you about Aztec Records? The fact that we have the power and the creative license to do anything we want. It feels like heaven to be able to release music that we're proud of and inspires us, without having to justify or give account to anybody. It's our own little empire and we're building it one brick at the time.
There seems to be a real family spirit with Aztec Records. Do all the artists get on well with each other? Definitely ! Most of them have become close friends, they even travel together, collaborate, organise shows together, remix each other, etc, etc. We signed a bunch of talented people and they all found an affinity that brought them closer to each other's music and projects. It's a great feeling. Especially when you see them all together under one roof.
How closely do you work with your artists? Very closely. We give them a lot of artistic direction and support, and get them in touch with the right people when it comes to production, promotion, etc. They represent us as much as we represent them, so it's very important for us to give them a lot of creative freedom and make sure they are happy with our work.
Do you feel an enormous amount of responsibility from the artists to get their music which you believe in out there for them? Yes, they trust we will make the right choices for their release (sometimes their first ever release) and really have faith in us, so we have to deliver the best we can. We only take on artists that we believe in 100% so they know we will do everything possible to achieve some good results.
What plans have you got for the future with Aztec? We are signing a couple of amazing new electro pop acts in the new year, and organising our 1 year Aztec Records Birthday Party in March next year. It will showcase all our artists, and will be a massive party-gig-club, even bigger than our Launch. Not to be missed! We're also working on putting together an Electro Pop music festival abroad next summer, but can't say much about that yet!
Nina, how excited are you to be releasing ‘Take Me Away?’ I’m over the moon. This is my first release and I think I've chosen one of my best tracks for it. The response has been great, I'm very proud of it.
It seems like a very personal song. Please could you tell us about why you wrote it and the emotions it stirred whilst doing so? I was bored of my 9-5 job and dreamed everyday about something exciting to happen. Like performing at a festival or meet someone that can take me away from my desk. Sometimes you feel like it’s all too much and all you do is work, whilst life passes you by in fast motion. Every time I hear this song now though, it puts a smile on my face. It’s good to crawl out of your comfort zone and take on new challenges in life.
What are your plans for after this release? I'm putting the finishing touches on my second single called ‘It Kills Me’, due out in the new year, and already started recording some other brand new tracks that I can't wait to show the world. I'm also working on video clips, collaborating with other artists and working on the live shows too. Looking like a really busy end of the year for me!
Finally, to make this mixtape you must have been through all the label’s music. Did it dawn on you how much quality music you have on board Aztec when you had it all there in front of you? Yes, totally. It's amazing that we only started with the label 8 months ago and we already have such a broad range of artists in our roster. We keep getting approached by new unsigned talent every day that really want to be a part of what we've created, so we must be doing something right.
