Whether there is something in the water, or whether it's pure coincidence, we just don't know, but Spain is fast becoming a centre of the electronic world. Coyu, Uner and Edu are three talents are flying the yellow flag all over the world, playing gigs in every continent, at every major festival and in clubs big and small on a weekly basis. Coyu is Suara music boss, but also a producer and remixer for the likes of Skint and 2020Vision. Uner has a close association to impressive Hamburg label Diynamic, and Edu Imbernon is the incredibly young Space, Ibiza resident with tracks on Cr2, Get Physical and Trapez. Together they are re-inventing tech house in their own inimitable way and have each recently tackled remixes of classic X-Press 2 tracks for release on Skint. We caught up with the trio who – in 2010 – also mixed Live & Direct in 2010, and asked them about the Spanish Revolution.
Pulse: What's in the Spanish water at the moment with all you guys emerging do you think? Uner: [Laughs] I dont know! No, really we have a lot of artists working on the underground scene since years ago, maybe a little more techno, but still doing a really good job and touring around the world! But it seems like the scene is focused now on us three, because we are the new ones, and we are doing the right music for the moment. But like I told you, we are not the first ones and I hope also not the last ones.
Did you all grow up around good strong scenes in Spain? Edu: I grew up in a rave scene, playing illegal rave parties from electro techno to hard techno, it was an amazing experience for me that helped a lot for sure to make me like I am now. Then I moved to Berlin at 19, it helped a lot to change my perception of electronic music
Do you think there is a uniqueness to you as you are Spanish – something other producers don't have? Edu: Maybe the influences we have, the unforgettable summers and the vibe of the people around us here in Spain. I guess the weather is something important to our mood also, and so the way we make music.
And when did you first all meet? What brought you together? Edu: I met Coyu while I was living in Berlin, we did "El Baile Aleman" then. I think Coyu and Uner met the same year to make music also. And I met Uner in the beginning of my career (when I was 17 or 18), when I was posting my demos on some music forums to see what people thought, he was already a big producer and he wrote to me, then we did a track together, now we three are good friends!
When did you first start producing together? Where do you do it? Coyu: Our first track together was released on Get Physical, Tres Es Three. DJ T asked us to do a track for their famous compilation Full Body Workout and we went to Uner's studio in Lleida together. It was very funny, not just for making a track but for all of us staying in the same place for a couple of days . We love to make jokes and be funny, so that's why we're always very receptive to do things together, but we're very busy so we don't have the chance to do it very often
Does each of you have a specific job or how does it work? Coyu: Our job and passion is the music. We spend 24 hours of the day committed to the music. We're very proud to have the chance to do what we love to do.
You played together at Space I understand, how was that? Coyu: It's our second Summer playing all three together in Space Ibiza. Both were excellent. Playing in the main Terrace of Space is a great experience- one of our fav rooms in the world. So imagine to play with your buddies, all three together at the same time for thousands of people. We love Ibiza, we love Space and we love to play together.
And on tour in the US together? Do you plan your sets? Coyu: It not was a real tour, because we just did a party. But what a party! Cruise party in Toronto (Canada). 5 hours of madness. Then an after-hour party where we played a few hours more. Was very fun to play together again.
Any funny stories from tour? Uner: I can not speak except in the presence of my lawyer! [Laughs] Yes, we have a lot of Funny stories in our solo and group tours. We love to stay up for 24 hours joking so you can imagine! Coyu loves to dance shaking the ass, Edu loves to invent new words and expressions and I need to eat every 3hours like a child. That 3 special things plus another 1000 freak moments together on tour are perfect for a lot of hours laughing!!
What's coming up that you're all most looking forward to? Edu: I think we are looking forward to the same, just to be happy doing what we love, and to try our best in every moment, we will see in a few years if we get it!
