Crazy P's Pick of the Remixes

When We On is Crazy P's excellent new album that dropped on 2020 Vision this month. Their 6th album so far,  it has come complete with critical acclaim and a slew of excellent remixes from the likes of Hot Toddy, Julio Bashmore and Jamie Jones.  Well known for some pretty tasty edits of their own, not least for Wolf + Lamb's Greg Paulus earlier this year, we caught up with three fifths of the band to ask them what their favourite recent remixes are ahead of the album launch party this Friday, 30th September, at Corsica Studios.

Kid Creole. I DO BELIEVE - 40 Thieves mix by Hear This

My fave remix of recent is Kid Creole I Believe (40 Thieves Remix). Kid Creole was a guy I used to watch wide eyed when I was younger - I always wanted to be a Coconut!  We saw him live a Camp Bestival a couple of years back and he was entertainment maximus-sharp, witty with impeccable dress sense. The new track is groove driven with swirling stabs and a persistant and driving bassline, rhythmic guitar licks and enough disco flavours to tear the arse out of a pair of flares- a dancefloor killer with lyrical wit and rhythm. I believe in Tinkerbell and I believe in Jaws!  So do I if you do, Kid Creole - I am under your spell!

My favourite remix has to be Kenny Dixon Junior's remix of Innerzone Orchestra People Make The World Go Round. It's quite old but it remains timeless. Faced with the unenviable task of remixing a massive bacharach tune, Kenny (aka Moodymann) threw convention out of the window by ignoring all the source material, assembling a band of then unheard of Detroit musicians (amongst them Amp Fiddler and Norma Jean Bell) and producing a thoroughly different and modern take on the standard. It sounds like they're jamming in a basement, which gives it so much character and makes it feel organic (did i just say organic?). It starts at a slow bpm with the alto sax taking the melody line through the song untill, from out of nowhere, and like only Moodymann can, the tempo is upped and it moves into a sublime dancefloor groover, really heavy in the bass, before returning to the original downtempo motif.  I heard Francois K play it last record at Body & Soul years ago and the unified reaction it got there has always stayed with me. Tempo and dynamics are important but this record is all about the feeling!

One of my favourite remixes of the last year or so was Visionquest's remix of Kiki's Good Voodoo. Jim first played it to me in the studio and it wasn't a track I instantly liked on the first listen. It takes a little time for you to get your head in it. It starts with a very hypnotic chant with discordant synth lines, which builds and builds till you get to this drop to this old skool D 50 organ bass sound and just kick and hats, dead minimal. Then the vocal comes in, real dry "somebody call a doctor, I'm hotter than I've ever been". After i'd heard this out a couple of times I was hooked, its proper sweaty late night basement action for all the heads.  Sublime deep house at its best, love it!
