Musica Festival Preview and Ticket Comp

Set in Tumbalong Park in Sydney's Darling Harbour and boasting a finely cured selection of nine artists, five of which are making their debut Australian appearances, the boutique Musica festival will be hosting a line up from all over the globe.

The lineup includes Pulse faves: LA producer Baths, Sydney IDM band Bon Chat Bon Rat, Electric Wire Hustle from NZ, the Mercury Prize nominee Ghostpoet [pictured], Montreal hip hop producer and break dancer Lunice, Italian future disco duo Tiger & Woods and Australian pair Mitzi and Simon Caldwell.

Pulse has 2 x Double Passes (4 x tickets in total) to giveaway this this classy music festival. Winners must be 18 + and must email their full name, mobile number and postal address, along with the answer to this question: Which of the nine amazing Musica festival artists has Pulse Radio recently interviewed?
Enter >here<

If your not yet convinced to enter the competition, then you will be by the time you get through our preview look at the line up below:

GHOSTPOET
A U.K. MC and recent Mercury Prize nominee whose beats and flow brim with drowsy anxiety, Ghostpoet (Obaro Ejimiwe) became involved with music while attending university. He was a member of a grime collective but eventually gravitated toward a less energetic production sound and MC’ing style, introduced on 2010’s The Sound of Strangers, a self-released four-track missive that caught the ear of BBC DJ Gilles Peterson.

Peterson licensed the EP for his Brownswood label and featured a demo version of the track Liines on the sixth Brownswood Bubblers compilation, issued that November. The following February, Brownswood issued Peanut Butter Blues and Melancholy Jam, the first Ghostpoet full-length. Don't sleep on this chance to see one of the most interesting and orginal acts in the headlines today and check out this video where Musica team up Ghostpoet with fellow Musica act Simon Caldwell over Skype.

SBTRKT
Design is at the heart of this project: first the instruments, then the songs and finally the masks. Whilst massively prolific, a minimalist ethos runs through the work and style of SBTRKT, not just in the name but in the precision of the sonics and arrangements. After dropping audacious white-label re-rubs of Goldie & Radiohead in 2009, SBTRKT has announced himself in 2010 with releases on dubstep stalwarts Ramp + Brainmath & eclectic indie label, Young Turks. Check out our review of his debut album here on Pulse.

Remixes for M.I.A., Modeselektor & Basement Jaxx have left the clubs wanting more and the masked man has obliged in the form of recent collaborative bangers w/ Sinden & Sampha. Whilst record heads and shop salesmen argue over whether SBTRKTs sound is more “techno”,“neo-garage” or “dubstep”, the forthcoming album plus releases on Tempa, Young Turks and Monkeytown place him comfortably in any category he wishes to occupy.

BATHS
For mercurial L.A. music-maker Will Wiesenfeld, Baths has been a long time coming. The 21-year-old has spent the better part of his days living amidst "pleasant" and "unremarkable" in the suburbs of the San Fernando Valley, so perhaps it's due to a general lack of local inspiration that Wiesenfeld's own work has never fit into a prefab box of its own.

Over the last six years, under the handle of [Post-Foetus], Wiesenfeld has gainfully explored the intersections and outer reaches of both electronic and acoustic music. With Baths, his eclecticism finds its greatest focus yet, in a hail of lush melodies, ghostly choirs, playful instrumentation and stuttering beats. You all know the drill.

TIGER & WOODS
Shrouded in mystery! No one knows where it’s coming from, no one knows where it’s going. Special extended disco versions carefully tuned, remixed, over-dubbed, cut and sliced. This is what DJ Sneak should sound like today. Limited shizzle.

You know the deal. Here today, gone tomorrow. Only Pulse can tell you more, in our recent interview with the duo here on Pulse.

LUNICE
In a little over a year, Lunice had managed to capture the attention of the world, with an eclectic sound and out-of-the ordinary production capability. Lunice is a natural born entertainer who has the drive, sound, and dexterity to make us move. He was able to get a firm grip of the electronic beats scene across Canada and the United States with his live mixing of beats, bass, and splintered electronica.

While taking cues from Autechre, Bangladesh, Dilla, and the Ed Banger clique, Lunice managed to craft his own recipe which makes dance floors bump and bass bins thump. This 22 year old producer has put out remixes out on prominent labels such as Mad Decent, Sony Music, Warner Music Group, XL Recordings, Young Turks, Big Dada, Top Billin’ and a recent solo EP entitled Stacker Upper which was released on the Scottish label LuckyMe. The discography continues to grow by the day.

SIMON CALDWELL
Simon Caldwell is one of a handful of DJ's whose name adds a certain integrity to an event. Throughout the 12 years he's been playing records to beer drinkers, bum shakers and radio listeners alike, he has managed to avoid the stifling 'style' classification so many other DJ's trap themselves into, keeping himself free to draw on his varied loves of deep, soulful house, techno, funk, jazz, electro, booty, hip hop and anything else which catches his ear. Born and raised in Sydney, Simon began playing records in 1991 when he inherited the Funk Inc. show on 2-MBS FM from Paul Carroll, playing a mix of funk, jazz, soul, hip hop, house for over five years.

To the present day Simon has rocked the dancefloor of practically every venue and clubnight in Sydney. He is regularly booked to play peak sets at some of Sydney's biggest house events and has pitched his skills alongside dozens of internationals, including Derrick Carter, Jeff Mills, Derrick May, DJ Godfather, Richie Hawtin, Kelli Hand, Frankie Knuckles, Gilles Peterson, and many more.

BON CHAT BON RAT

Sydney three-piece Bon Chat, Bon Rat sound exactly like a band from the year 2010. Which is to say they sound exactly like a band from the year 1982 who discovered Macbooks in a time machine then smoked too much weed and proceeded to wig the fuck out. - Pedestrian.tv

Blackbird by Bon Chat, Bon Rat

For a warm up to Musica, you can catch Bon Chat, Bon Rat alongside the rest of their fellow Astral People at Tone on August 27th. Featuring our recently reviewed local Stones Throw signee Jonti, as well as Wintercoats and Albatross, it will be their first show back from recording their new album at a farm, and there will also be some free beer!  Grab tow track off their free EP below and then get the rest here.
