Luca Bacchetti has been a mainstay of the house circuit for a number years now. Since Beatport voted him the best new comer in 2008, his star has only continued to rise with releases on all the labels it's cool to name drop these days and all the clubs you want to get on the guestlist for. Mikele Tabucchi caught up with Luca following a day at the Crazy Circus.

Pulse: How has the first year and half of Hideout's existence been, can you give us some anticipations on label future? Luca: For Davide Squillace and me Hideout is a gamble: in a very short space of time it has established itself in the marketplace as a label which doesn't follow the going trends; but instead is governed by our instincts. As I have said Hideout isn't just a label; but something which encompasses our vision, our lifestyle. This year we have hosted parties all over the world: twice at WMC, we will be at DC10 Ibiza on the 10th of August and Amsterdam for the ADE. But all this is not enough. It's just one aspect of our work. Soon we'll be releasing the new Patrick Lindsey EP and Davide & Guti's new track plus remixes by Kerri Chandler and Dubfire to follow! Then my EP and a series of very talented new Italian artists.

Every year there are more and more parties organized in Miami WMC and Barcelona Sonar. Do you think that this can lead to saturation or dispersion? There are two main points I'd like to make: It's true that this year there have been lots of parties, and I don't think it makes sense to hold the WMC and the Ultra Festival in two separate weeks: it dilutes the offer. Last year too, Timewarp contrasted with the WMC. I believe that at the moment clubbing is alive and well, the public clearly wants to get down and party, otherwise how do you explain this explosion of parties even though all we hear about is the economic crisis. Music has always measured the pulse of society at large and one can sense that there is a great wish for change. The professionals must get back to dealing with this market and not leave the running to amateurs.
More and more you can hear purists saying that they like a DJ because "he plays only with vinyls" what are your thought on digital/vinyl discussions ? I'm not interested anymore in the instrument used for a performance, what's important to me me is that when we talk about music, we talk about quality. Those who make a point of boasting their vinyl "credentials" are just marketing themselves. like Ritchie Hawtin did with his promotion of new technologies. You can reach your objective either way, as long as you keep the Music at the centre of it all.
How do you like to start and to finish a DJ set? I don't follow a set of rules, time permitting I like to try to create a voyage, you need at least three hours to do this and bring your public with you. I like to map the gig, creating a crescendo. Usually the finale is something special when the public is special. Lately I finished with Sade's Sweetest Taboo. I've never had strict rules regarding this.

You live in Barcelona. Can you tell us your four city secrets? Great question. Barcelona is crazy: so much choice: I like to take friends to Caelum for a tea, a really unusual place. I also love to wander the bookshops and antique markets, Rodes Bookshop! My secret piazza is Plaza Felipe Neri, a fascinating corner to find peace. Then there's Discos Juan, where you can listen to vinyl funk and soul, which really gets me going.
What do you like to do when you're touring and you have some days off between gigs? I consider myself to be really fortunate because this job gives me the chance to travel and I love travelling. Recently I was in the States and Mexico. During my three days off I got together with some friends, including Luca from Audiofly and we went to Sotano de las Golondrinas and made a kayak excursion in a remote river of the Mexican Sierra Madre: 47°C. Crazy, I know, and physically challenging, but it's the only way to get the best drug on the market: pure adrenaline!
