In celebration of Stones Throw Records 15-year anniversary, they have announced a series of shows with Stones Throw artists recording live, directly to vinyl, in front of an audience at Capsule Labs studio/pressing plant in Los Angeles.
The sets will be recorded straight to vinyl LP in real time. No computers, tape, or digital gear will be used in the recording. The artists will perform 15 minutes a piece with the recording engineers mixing and mastering the record as it’s happening. 500 units will be pressed on vinyl. No CD’s or digital copies will be manufactured or sold.
Stones Throw Direct-to-Disc #1 will take place just before Coachella weekend, Thursday, April 14, with headliner Mayer Hawthorne & The County. Opening will be jazz group Rick (featuring Sam Gendel of Teen Inc) with Stones Throw founder Peanut Butter Wolf DJing between sets.
Stones Throw Records began 15 years ago as a vinyl-only label and continues producing LPs, 12-inch and 7-inch singles well into the digital age. The label’s vinyl-centric roots and pursuit of “music by DJs for DJs” has evolved in recent years to include a roster of artists with fully developed live performances.
