Little Nobody
The Condimental Op
IF? RECORDS
The Condimental Op is the first release from Little Nobody's upcoming LP Hard Foiled. A veteran of the Australian electronic music scene, (although now residing in Tokyo) Little Nobody is the main production guise of one Andrez Bergen. Alongside Little Nobody, Andrez is best known for starting IF? Records in Melbourne back in 1995, a record label intent on discovering and releasing the best in Australian underground music. More than 15 years on, IF? are very much still on track, with The Condimental Op their 127th release. To give the single an international edge, Detroit's Aux 88, Chicago's K. Alexi Shelby and Sebastian Bayne from Sydney were appointed remix duties.
Aux 88's Little Somebody remix is far and away the standout track on the release. Though not groundbreaking, it achieves and strongly affirms a number of important things. Primarily that Aux 88 are in a production pedigree of their own, purveyors of true, hard-hitting acid-infused electro. Indeed, the track has been played extensively by Dave Clarke, who recently featured it on his White Noise radio show. K. Alexi Shelby serves up an almost unrecognisable remix compared to the original. It is a wonderfully trippy and journey-esque affair, completely enveloping the listener in its hypnotic rhythms and melodies. Difficult to pin down stylistically, it feels more Detroit than Shelby's native Chicago, straddling the increasingly hazy lines between house and techno. Production wise, Shelby ventures into territory others would not, dispensing with forward sounding drums and bass, creating, however, a record still very much in context.
While closer to the original, (only because of the distinctive bass line), Sebastian Bayne takes us in yet another direction. After a cautious start, the track quickly evolves into tough, more industrial territory, the listener, once again, finding themselves effortlessly transported to a higher plane. The original, as is more than often the case with Little Nobody's work, defies any real categorisation. Broadly speaking it is both house and techno; raw, funky, a touch wonky and perhaps most importantly, bass driven.
The Condimental Op is a varied package of interesting remixes which definitely compliment the quirky original. However, if you're looking for tracks akin to the Little Nobody compostion, you may find yourself disappointed - these remixes are on a different planet.
