Strange Weather Isn’t It?
WARP RECORDS
Strange Weather Isn’t It? is the fourth studio album from indie dance/punk funk outfit !!! (Chk Chk Chk), as such the guys get straight down to business with this new offering of infectious grooves. There remains throughout the album something of a moody undercurrent, adding an extra dimension to the record that fans of the group should be familiar with.
The record introduces a somewhat pared back sound in comparison to the group’s previous releases according to vocalist Nic Offer, “It’s molded down to its most basic essence”. This accentuates the quality of the production and all elements appear well balanced and complementary. As a !!! and Eric Brouchek (former house engineer for DFA Records) co-production, talent and vision certainly are not lacking, ideas however, are not overflowing, resulting in a well measured and thought out record.
The first track off the album, AM/FM invites the listener in with a steady drum intro then progresses into full funk mode (watch out for the crescendo), with quite a tasty bass line to tap along to, a good drum and bass number. Wannagain Wannagain the third track, is certainly bound to grab attention on the indie dance floor, with a lively tempo and big sound, featuring an interesting guitar solo with numerous break downs, it keeps you guessing right up till the end. Another highlight, The Hammer, begins with a dreamy effect laden key intro and some very fine high-hat and snare work underscore the track’s forward motion, the keys gradually morphing into full dance floor assault. Dynamic from beginning to end this track sums the album up well, a perfect anti-thesis to AM/FM, which opens the album. Once The Hammer has run through, Strange Weather Isn’t it? feels well and truly completed.
Despite the departure of two members prior to writing the record and one during recording, not to mention the death of former drummer John Fuchs in 2009, !!! has managed to overcome adversity to create a tight and tidy record with more than enough solid beats, hooky bass lines and deep grooves to make for exciting, interesting listening. Strange Weather Isn’t it?, instantly enjoyable with more than enough subtlety to warrant repeat spins.
