Mama - Renegade

Renegade is Mama's debut solo release on Batty Bass. Following her own gigs and current tour with Bloc Party's Kele this is full of urban tension, dark seduction and knife edge sex appeal.

BATTY BASS

Hannah Holland’s Batty Bass has boldly placed itself on the musical map, putting out quirky packages that marry UK urban swagger with Berlin influenced minimalism. Perfectly extolling this mantra is Mama, who’s upbringing in Streatham, to French and Nigerian parents has left a gritty imprint on her brand of lo fi electro that she produces in her Berlin studio. BB 005 comes with a radio edit of Renegade, while Jay Haze – whom the UK producer met while exploring the possibilities of her new city’s epic night life – brings the kick drums to the forefront in to explore the jam’s dark floor focused underbelly.

Sultry and sexy in a Grace Jones-esque diva style, Renegade is the story of the introduction of a foreign body into her life and the staggering effect it has on our femme fatal. Theatrical and melodramatic, the pomp and posture of the track is seductive and full of intrigue. The production quality backs up this approach to the hilt. Ferocious and oozing self belief, whether you are a fan or not of electro pop this diva demands respect! Her self penned works have been road tested at the award winning Batty Bass parties in London and she is now carving a niche as an artist in her own right.

Jay Haze’ remix chops up soft chords and a chugging bass line with interludes of hectic percussion that brings in a break from the 4/4. Cymbals smash into stabs of industrial noise, unravelling an intriguing Jekyll and Hyde style track. Perhaps exploring the threatening presence of the character in the song as well as his lusty airs, Haze has come up with a raw curve ball of a remix. He works on the lust in Mama’s vocals subtly manipulating them to twist his own take on the track.

The combination of a diva in waiting with renegade house/hip hop go-between Haze is a winning one, carrying on the labels jaunt between the clinical and the insane. Both tracks boldly pronounce the marked differences and similarities between London and Berlin's respective musical scenes. And do it with much class, wit, bravado, and of course, bass.
