Above & Beyond's Jono Grant recently held a discussion with the legends that are Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe of Pet Shop Boys for an exclusive Mixmag interview, with the dialogue touching on everthing from the Pet Shop Boys' career to the 'EDM' explosion in the United States.
It was during this interview that Grant expressed his opinion on the latter issue, speaking about his experiences of EDM in Las Vegas and how he thinks the genre's popularity within the continent may be on the way out.
"The bubble in America is gonna burst. It’s got to the stage where it’s all about what we call The Playlist," he says.
"There are about 12 records that these DJs are playing. They may play their own music in their sets around the world but when they come to Vegas, it’s a case of sticking to The Playlist. It's a bit cynical really."
Pet Shop Boys' Neil Tennant then agreed with Grant on his thoughts, saying, "What’s gonna happen in America is what happened to disco. Suddenly everyone is gonna say, ‘oh God, I fucking hate this’."
