It’s every underground music fans ultimate fantasy conversation - Richie Hawtin, Heidi, Seth Troxler and Ryan Crosson in a room chatting about the original Detroit parties back in the 90s, when music was music, pills were pills, raves were raves and no one slated each other on twitter after their 'show'. BBC Radio One have done an hour long documentary with Richie Hawtin and Pulse have some sneak peaks to whet your auditory appetite before its airing on Monday at 9pm on BBC Radio 1. Richie tells Heidi about the infamous story of him being stopped by the police on his way to play at a rave inside Brooklyn Bridge with a shaved head and a car full of equipment and his subsequent difficult time playing in Detroit.
Richie and Heidi also discuss the concept of modern ‘EDM’ and how different many of the supposed current Electronic Music 'giants' backgrounds and sets are in comparison to how music used to be in America. Seth and Ryan also chip in and explain what the raves in Detroit used to be like - that after leaving the party the only thing people said was ‘WHAT just happened?'. The image of Richie, Heidi, Seth and Ryan in a rave under Brooklyn Bridge, covered in black plastic, with one strobe and probably the most banging original techno around is something that definitely warrants someone building a time machine.
