Edu Imbernon - More Space

As label boss of Eklektisch, part time Ibiza resident and one of the new wave of Spanish techno, Edu Imbernon has been one of the scene's rising stars over the last couple of years. James Hutchins speaks to the Spaniard about DJing at Space, his new release on More Music and his favourite Ibiza hangouts.

Edu Imbernon, Great to Catch up with you! Where in the world are you now? Ibiza, Spain, where i live for the summer season.

What was it that made your choice to live in Ibiza for the summer? Love this place, is just 20mins away by flight from my city (Valencia) and my gigs here during the summer. Life here is lovely during the summer, lots of friends, best weather and world capital of the party. [Laughs]

Being a resident of the White Isle do you must have some Ibiza tips/hotspots? Yes, totally. My fav beach is Cala Saladeta, is so beautiful, the access is a bit complicated as you have to walk thru rocks for 10 mins, but it totally deserves it! My fav restaurant is Kumharas, sunset and an amazing dinner is a perfect combo, also the Ushuaia hotel restaurant (Minami) for Sushi is unbelievable!

You’re mixing one of the official Space Ibiza CDs this summer! How did this come about and what can we expect from such a mix? I have a close relationship with Cr2, i did 2 years ago another compilation along Uner & Coyu and they proposed me this year to do the official CD1 of Space, its an honour for me! People can expect fresh music, Nu disco, Deep House and some Tech House! im really happy with my selection, CD is already out and im really excited with the impact that is having.

How do you find time to get in the studio amongst all the Ibiza shenanigans? Quite difficult, i dont usually produce a lot in summer, i travel more than in winter and also love to discover new parties and djs and inspiration!

Speaking of the studio, what’s your set up like? And if you were to choose one sacred piece of kit over the rest, what would it be and why? Simple one, Mac Pro, Edirol FA101, Event Opal, M-Audio midi keyboard and the sacred piece of the kit will be my Access VIRUS TI, love it! The important thing is the hear, not the gear, in my opinion.

A couple of years ago you were considered one of ‘a new breed’ of Spanish Producers. Who would you highlight as one to watch for this year? I think im still into the new breed of Spanish Producers, we have lots of work to do yet... Anyway there are lots of new artists coming up as Los Suruba, Ramiro Lopez, Samuel Dan...

Tell us more about your latest release on More Music. Its a very special track that i produced after last summer living in Ibiza, im glad it was released on More Music, love the label. The remixes are also amazing, Jozif did a great work and Inxec remix is just perfect, epic bassline!

Your remix of Twilight is coming out on More Music’s compilation in September. What can you tell us about this remix? First time i heard Twilight i was totally impressed with all the elements, it was difficult to do the remix, as i loved the original, but i think people will love it, is very funky and fat!

You run your own label Eklektisch, can you tell us more about the imprint and the ethos behind it. Eklektisch is my long term project, i just release music when i have something special, we had a big success in 2010 with the release of Pleasurekraft - Tarantula, and also last summer with my track along Los Suruba - Punset with the remix from Solomun, im very happy with the label, new one is by Camiel Daamen, a Dutch guy with a lovely track called Lost In Love, signed this record playing in an after party during ADE in Amsterdam, he played after me and i remember going mad when he played Lost In Love, i asked him if it was signed and he said no! Remixes will be from Los Suruba and Nacho Marco.

What’s next step for Edu Imbernon? More EPs for this winter in some of my fav labels, and maybe an Album, im just waiting for the perfect moment, for me, an album is something really special an important, wont be as a 10tracks EP for sure, also new tours for Australia and Asia, and exciting dates in Europe and South America!
