Vicious Circle & Need For Mirrors
Eyes Wide Shut/Instinct
SIREN
After an explosive first release, Siren rolls out EP number two, a Vicious Circle and Need For Mirrors double-header sure to satisfy lovers of both deep, ballsy rollers and warmer, smoother liquid vibes.
Eyes Wide Shut is the perfect example of the “liquid tech” sound which has emerged the last couple of years, blending the smooth, soulful vibes of early liquid D&B with the stripped-back, mechanical drums and well-rounded basslines of tech-step and neurofunk. Beautiful, goosebumps-inducing vocal samples chime in over reverbed strings and improvised piano rolls, while tight, clicky kicks, crisp hats and punchy snares help the tune roll out but also leave plenty of room for the full, immersive bassline to do its work.
Instinct is more your standard dancefloor-smashing, sub-wrecking techy roller, but stands out amongst the pack thanks its impeccable production and tastefully understated feel. It’s easy enough to throw down the roughest, most ridiculous bassline you can come up with over some highly compressed drums, but it takes real talent to create a rugged, dark, and properly filled-out vibe with decidedly minimal sounds at your disposal. The bassline is filtered right down into just a menacing growl, which is augmented by the bone-crushing kicks and rapid-fire hats and snares. The edits and breaks come in at just the right moments too, leading to spontaneous “hand bassline” moves (you know the ones I mean). Anyone with a penchant for techy D&B needs to pick this up, now.
